PXGE TWO MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. 1IEDFORD, OREGON, , THURSDAY, JUNE 2, 1932. Mothers Reassured by Dr. Brady's Exposure of "Marking" Superstition BJ Dr. William Brady To tfc physlclsn human Uf is an InseruUbl mjratery only In Ita be ginning. Th tndlng oJ Ufa doe not Impress him ao much, provided It cornea to a natural end. No ona in th fulnaaa of Tear envisages death mora eaJtnlv and philosophically than tha phvelclan who haa In countleaa caaaa witnessed and aided tha launch ing of new Uvea. Birth and death; tha beginning and the end. Haa ever a aermon ao deeply atlrroa tha aoul. tha awe or tha Inner raverenoa of the nan aa thli miracle of the coming Into tha world of a new human life? It may ba true in tha atateaman'a aente that all men ar created equal. It la not true In the broader aenae Too many children are born defective. nhv.iosJlv defect ve. terribly ana eomatlmee bopelesely handicapped. : am referring now to congenital ef' facta, aa phyalclana call them. Con renltal meana almply that the con. Mien la preaent When the child la born and haa no other aignmoance, They a familiar enough to every body and wa need not name them her. They happen In every family. WAhnrfv u too aood. too rich, too atrong, or too healthy to bear a child with audi a defect. It It the eternal doom of lata, and that'a all wa know about It. A fair eeneral knowledge of em. bryology enablea one to understand how theaa congenital defecta happen altho we cannot underatand why they happen. We know, for example, that so-called hare lip (a cleft or notch in tha upper lip) la due to a ceesa tlon or delay In the natural process of development of the atructurea in volved; every human being haa "hare lip" and cleft palate anl varioua oin ar potential defecta prior to birth. Where knowledge or underaUndlng la lacking, auperatltlon la rampant Ona of tha crueleet auperatltlona pre vailing among tha Ignorant and the misinformed la that Of "maraing tha unborn child, fiuch an elemen tary knowledge of embryology aa very schoolboy or achoolglrl ahould have completely diapelj thla auper atltlon, for the Ingenioua or fanciful explanation offered for "marking" be eomea too abaurd when considered in the light of auch knowledge. I aay thla auperatltlon la cruel be cause It causes much needlesa anx iety and worry for expeotsnt mothera at a time when they ahould be cheer ful and happy. Unquestionably the effect of this emotion, fear, anxiety or worry, la Injurloue to anybody health, and the prospective mother and her unborn child ar not Im mune, On of the main reasons why the incident or circumstance to which the "marking" Is ascribed by the In evitable old harpy fall to lmpreaa Mi enlightened mind la the Incon gruity of the explanation tha ma ternal Impression occur at the wrong time, either too long before or too long after the development pause or abnormality. Then beside, the tales fabricated by these vicious gos sips are too far fetched and the manifestations In th ohlld too hazy In character to aatlsfy a aenalbl per son ven tho he have no knowledge of embryology. t single Instance will suffice to Il lustrate the general run of caaaa of alleged "marking." A child had con genital "clubfoot." The parents were on farm. Th explanation th neighborhood flahwlf broadcast waa plaualbl enough to the Ignorant; She pointed out that the mother had ren dered firat aid to her husband when he apralnad his ankle In the fleU one day two weeks prior to th baby'a birth. But this explanation waa not so good In view of th fact that th defect showed a cessation or delay in th development of th foot dating back at least two months. That Is to say th defctlv foot had developed normally up to th eeventh or eighth month of prenatal Uf and then for acme reason that nobody knowa the process of development in that foot had been Interrupted or retarded. Th wonderful part of It la that auch Interruption or delay In th growth processes occurs so rarely. Every hu man being la "club-footed" berore birth. be remedied by plastic surgery If the operation Is done In early Infancy. The concept of maternal, parental Impreaalona aa applied to mental or emotional effects upon the unborn child, tiju even less to commend It than haa the fancy of physical mark ing. What artistic, cultural or other treads, talent or gift either the mother or th father may have, aa well as sny vicious traits either may have, are as likely to be Inherited by offsprings aa Is the personal appear ance, or the type of stature, or form of parents, but any such Influence upon the unborn Is determined many years tefor th advent of the llttl stranger and th mental, emotional or spiritual Uf or experlenc of th prospective mother in th oompara tlvely short period of her expectancy has practically nothing to do with the quoetlon of th child' disposition, talents or traits. Search scientific medical literature ss minutely aa you wish and call to the" witness stand all the authorities tha country and you will not dis cover tangible support for the Idiotic notion that a mental or emotional shock suffered by the prospective mother sffects the mental or emo tional integrity of her child. At any rate, let us give the little stranger a fair break, and the best way to do that Is by keeping the prospective mother In a happy, cheer' ful frame of mind. If she has enough brains there Is no reason why she should permit the superstition of "marking" to give her a moment's anxiety. (Copyright John F. Dllle Co.) SALEM, Ore.. June a. (AP) W. O. Campaigns for the speakership of th nous or representatives and for sen. at presidency of the 1938 legislative aeaslon were already under way In the capital city, although many of the seats in both houses are yet to be decided In th general election. She la now looking forward to th birth of her second child and ah aska whether th second child la likely to hare th am defect. Th truth Is thst any child born to any parent may have a congenital defect. Lightning sometimes does strike twice In the same place. The second child la aa likely to have a congenital defect aa la any child ever born, But how to answer th expec ant mother'a question ao that ahe may hav the greatest assurance Any Injury or aever ahock Impairs th xpeetant mother'a health quite a much aa It would If aha were not preparing for the coming of a baby. But It Is absurd to Imagine that trif ling Incident, which ordinarily would not seriously affect th woman, as sume grave proportions and causa dreadful ooruequenoes if ah happens to b looking forward to th visit of a llttl atranger. It la absurd to Ima- gin that casual mental Impressions of th mother can altar or control th Inexorable ways of nature in the growth and development of th child. It would be more reasonabl to fancy surprising a neighbor pet anak aun- nlng himself under our lawn awing would caus you and m to grow reie or a forked tongue. Aa I write thla there comes an In quiry from a girl who waa born with cleft palate and harelip, which ahe attribute to th 111 health of her mother (of course hr mother's health or 111 health had nothing to do with It) and now ah contemplate marry ing but h salutes for fear any children bom to hr may hav the same de lect. She aya trier had been no oth er Instance af-lt In her mother' fam ily aa far back as they hare been able to trace. It this girl marries and haa children her children ait no more likely to have such a defect than are your children or mine or anybody else . Even If a child has hare lip or slept palate or both, the delect ma first gams In several seasons. -- JACKSONVILLE, June n.(SpD vommencement exercises wer held for th Jacksonville high school grad uating class at the local gymnasium Thursday evening.
