E Report On Extensive Pro gram Made by Committee Hope to Win Samue Hill Prize for Jackson Co The San-.uel Hill contest for the beautlflcatlon of the Pacific highway ended last week and the coming week will be devoted to Judging. Jackson county's participation In the contest waa carried on under the leadership of O. Ij. MacDonald, chairman of the looal committee, and Mrs. Mabel C, Mack, appointed secretary. The ex tensive program completed waa en- Bounced yesterday and la submitted by the following central committee: Miss Jane Snedloor, of D. A. R .! Mrs. H. M. Gen eral Improvement to Ul property bordering on the highway have been made by the outttng of weeds, remov ing debris, and a general clean-up and palnt-up campaign. Results Listed Under report of progreaa by sep arate communities are listed: Rogue River: Mrs. Bffle Blrdseye, the local chairman, waa very active In con tacting property owners and securing their aid In cleaning up premises. Approximately thirty mall box posts were painted In thle community. This territory included from Rogue River to Rock Point. ' Oold Hill: Residents of Gold Hill were very active In their efforts. All grass waa mowed on vacant lots and along the B. P. right-of-way through the town. All cans were gathered up nd all debrla removed from property throughout the city. Seeds, bulbs, and plants ware distributed to places along the highway to aid property ownera In improving the looks of their property. Actlvltlea In this town ex tended from Rock Point to Blackwell hill. All mall box post In this terri tory were painted. Central Point: All mall box posts were painted In this vicinity and all highway property given a general clean up. Medlords The owner of the Auto Wrecking place Just north of the city cooperated to the extent of nicely oleanlng up his place of business and removing unsightly objects from prop arty adjoining the highway. All prop erty owners and tenanta along North and South Riverside were contacted and responded very nicely by clean ing up yards and vacant lots. Foster and Klelser company had the grasa In front of all their locations bordering on the highway through town cut and the locations generally cleaned Tip. Mall box poets on both aides of town were painted. Phoenix: Secured cooperation in the mattter of painting mall box posts. Talent: Property owners responded with a general clean up. All mall box posts were painted. Ashland: The Bellevlew Orange ot Ashland donated trucks to go to the state line cleaning up the highway and atralghtenlng mall box posts and painting them. All debrla waa re moved and rubbish piled up and burned. Thta committee worked from the state line to near Talent. Organize Extension Unit for Ladies In E. Point Vicinity A home extension unit waa organ (red Friday afternoon at the Eagle Point grange hall by Mabel C. Mack, county home demonstration agent. Offloera elected were Mrs. C. 8. Ous-terhs-.it, President; Mra. Jessie Mlttel ataedt, vice president; and Mrs. Ger trude Hsek. secretary. The unit will meet the first Friday of each month, starting in October. Vegetable cookery, new clothes from old, and reduced cleaning costs were the subjects for study chosen by the group. A special meeting has been an nounced for June 10, at the home ot Mrs. Ousterhaut, from 10 a, m. to I SO p. m. A covered dish luncheon Is to b served at noon. The eubject of the demonstration to be given at that time by Mra. Mack, will be can ning of fruits, vegetables and meats. I 1NCT ON ONE VOTE Mrs. Alta Newman and H. D. Fearey of the Howard precinct with one vote each, tied for the Republican nom ination for precinct committeeman, at the primary. In accordance with the election law, they will assemble at the county clerk's office next Tues day and draw strnws to see who will receive the office. The law apeclfles a straw shall be drawn to decide, but no lepal controversy Is anticipated, If a coin la flipped. Antloch, Deter, Roxy Ann,. Asms Valley, Sterling and Union precincts failed to name a committeeman in the primary, and the vacancies will be filled by the central committee at Its first meeting next August. Billy. and daughter, Anna Grace of Modoc Point arrived, here this week to visit Mrs. Heckman'a parents, Mr. and Mra. M. R. Buck. Frank Matney of DayvlUe. Ore., Is spending this week with Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Hamilton and family. Mr. Matney la a brother of Mrs. Hamilton. .Frank Copple of Quelle, Calif., ar rived here Wednesday to spend a week with relatives on Applegate. Treeve Allen of San Francisco, formerly of thla community, ar rived here recently to seek work. Linton Cunningham, employed at Crater lake, arrived at Mr. and Mra. Jay Arant's Wednesday. Mr. Cunningham wrenched hla knee and waa advised by a physician to "lay off" a few days. Mrs. Frank Cameron and Warren Cameron motored to Olace Sunday where they plcnlced with friends from Oranta pas and Missouri Flat. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Taylor and daughter, Lucille, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Dutton of Eagle Point. Mine Edna Wisely, teacher this winter at Talent grade school, Is spending this week with Mr. and Mrs, Harold Crump on Little Apple- gate. Mlas Wisely and her sister, Miss Clara Wisely, teacher at Med ford, will leave Saturn ay for their home In San Diego, Calif. Mr. ar.J Mrs. George Watson and family of Medford and Mr. and Mrs. Olenn Hale and family of Chlloquln are spending some time at Peckham camp ground on Tale creek. Bill Bruin of Phoenix, road super visor, visited Little Applegate Mon day and employed Nelson Pursel and Fred West to grade the roads on Yale creek and upper Little Apple gate. Jessie Smith of thla section, who attends high school at Jacksonville, has the mumps. Jessie was forced to miss the last two weeks of school. A family reunion waa held at Aahland Sunday by the Matney fam ily. Attending from here were Bill Matney, Mrs. Charlie Hamilton and daughter. Margaret, Mrs. Ruth John son and forally, also Mr. and Mrs. William Copple of Murphy, Frank Matney of DayvlUe, who is visiting here and relatives from Medford. Mrs. Ethel E. Ludwlg of Medford has been named teacher tor the coming term at Applegate school. For several years there has been two teachers here, but it was thought only one necessary for next year. Leora Culy, student at the Asn- land Normal school spent last week end here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Culy. Leora was ac companied by four girl friends from school. They were Marguerite Wat son, Amy Lynch. Clara Attabury and Impa Tatlo. The girls hiked to Squaw lake and back Saturday, making a trip of 38 miles. Mr. and Mrs. Roy pninney ana family, who have been camped on, Little Applegate. took a homestead on Sterling creek and moved there thle week. They have about 75 little turkeys who will help them through the depression If the coyotes leave them alone. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Port attended the graduation exercises at Ash land Wednesday night, when their son. Lee, Jr., graduated from Aah-; land high school. i Mrs. Carl Vanderhoof and baby or Olympla, arrived here this week to spend the summer at the Williams mine at Logtown. where Mr. Van derhoof Is employed. DIAMOND LAKE ROAD INGJ George Howard, manager of Dia mond Lake resort, stated last evening that work la now being done on the road to Diamond lake, and that it la expected to be open from the east side by June 1. Table Rock Ends School Year With Picnic In Ashland TABLE ROCK, May 28. (Special) The school picnic in 'the park at Ashland Monday proved a very en joyable affair with 57 persons in cluding most of the pupils and their parents in attendance. . School closed here May 24 with a program in the evening consisting of the following numbers; Piano solo. Miss Frances Arnspiger; song selections by the Medford hl?h school boys' octette; reading by Rev. W. R. Balrd of Medford; dancing by pupils of Miss Ruth Luy; solo. Miss Doris Richardson and reading by Mrs. Harry Young. Mrs. Susanne Holmes Carter was present and presented perfect attend ance certificates to several pupils. Many flowera and gifts were presented the eleven rrsduates. Mother And Four In Narrow Escape SARDINE CREEK. May 28. (Spl.) Mrs. George Ring and four of her children narrowly escaped serious injury Monday, en. route to Gold Hill, when their Ford truck left t' road snd plunged over a 30-foot embankment into the creek bed.
