Welcoming committee of Medford' EUu lodge wu yesterday afternoon cheated out of the opportunity of escorting George Alpers In the of ficial Ska convention car, when memberi of the brotherhood in Orants Pass sent a misleading tele gram to the Medford temple. When the local greetera were about to "take off" for Orants Pass to do their escorting, Mr. Alpers arrived in Medford. driving the purple and white car, surrounded by shouting Cavemen. Although chagrined, the Medford Elks were courteous to their "guests," and entertained them royally. The official welcome of Medford lodge No. 1168, was extended "Mr. Al pers at the local temple immediately following his arrival, after which the party journeyed to the Jackson hotel for an Informal banquet. Members of the Orants Pass dele gation were Robert L. Jones, Dick Belden. John P. Heln, Charles Her ron. W Stock well, E. M. McKetston and T. H. El sera, the latter being the Elks' Chink (attired accordingly). Mr. Alpers was released to -the Med ford club by the Grants Pass Elks, with Joe Fllegel, local exalted ruler, making a brief address In behalf of the Medford temple. The driver of the good-will car ex pressed his Impressions of the Rogue River valley, and stated that he plan ned to return some time to fish in Rogue river. Mr. Alpers' home Is in Elizabeth, N. J. An Invitation from the president of the board of trustees of "A Cen tury of Progress," International ex position in Chicago, to the Medford lodge was also presented by the representative. Before leaving for Eureka, Cal., this morning. Mr. Alpers made official calls at the Armstrong Motor com pany, for service to his Studebaker car. and also to the Smith-Wat kins service station, local Firestone shop, on South Riverside avenue. The committee in charge of the welcome was E. C. "Jerry" Jerome, chairman, O. O. Alenderfer and E. C, Ferguson. Exalted Ruler Fllegel accompanied Mr. Alpers on his trip about Med ford this morning. LOCAL ANGLERS HAUL IN THREE A thrilling morning st Savage Rapids' dam was reported today noon by Dr. B. B. Elliott, Dr. J. P. Bray and Aubrey Bray upon their return from the Rogue. Dr. Elliott wu the first person at the dam to land a fish this morning. He brought In 33-pound salmon shortly after 6 o'clock. Dr. Bray caught two, one weighing 30 pounds, the other 30. The big thrill of the day was realized when toe three local fisher. men watched the eight-year old son of "Pop" Popklns, fishing guide from Orants Pass, land s 35-pound fish. Seated In his father's boat, be went through many contortions, battling with the fish, which was ' finally brought Into the boat with toe aid of "Pop." Into a fellow fisherman's boat a large salmon leaped by bis own choloe and the sportsman, of English descent, threw him back Into the river, declaring "I prefer to catch them." When the Medford anglers left the river he was stlU without fish. Blacks Arrive Enroute North On Fishing Trip Capt and Mrs. c. N. Black arrived here yesterday from San Francisco and are leaving today for the Mc Kenzle river country for a fishing trip. They will return the first of the week to spend the summer at their lodge on Rogue river. The Blacks returned from a cruise of the Pacific a short time ago and have since been In the bay city. Mrs. Black Is remembered as the former Mrs. Black Fraston of Medford. Her marriage to Captain Black waa a social event- of last fall In San Fran cisco. We are proud of the vote that the Ashland area gave many of the candidates some successful, some defeated In the general county count. The Dally Tidings has already stated before the primary that It would be unable to support Earl H. Fehl If he waa nominated, which we are willing to concede despite the defeat given him in the Ashland area. The Dally Tidings had already decided, but had not announced, that It would not support Wm. t. Phtpps, If he was elected, which is also conceded. OFFICERS OF TEMPLES The tenth annual convention of District No. 4 Pythian Sisters, i held In Medford May 31. The afternoon session waa called ! to order by District Deputy Grand Chief Ortla Barneburg. Those Intro- ' duced and escorted were Mrs. Mable A. Roberts of Ashland, past supreme representative; Mrs. Ella O. Wort man, Junior supreme representative; Mrs. Zelgler, matron of the Pythian : home, Vancouver, Wash. Mrs. Gleas on of Portland and Mrs. Eva Marks of Roseburg, each was presented with a corsage by Mrs. Olive Gaylord. Splendid reports were read from each temple represented. Mrs. Zelgler gave an Interesting talk about the Pythian home and the work being done there. R. G. Beach and H. G. Wortman brought greetings from the Knights' convention of District No. 5, also held In the city at that time. The following officers were elected for the new year: Mrs. Roper, Ther mayplae temple, district deputy grand chief; Mrs. Bva Marks, Umpqua tem ple, senior; Mrs. Ruth Walden, Talis man temple, Junior; Mrs. Neva Wl mer, Thermapylae temple, secretary; Miss Cora Judge, Talismans temple, treasurer; Mrs. T. Maine, Umpqua temple, protector; Mrs. Adilalde Swartz, Talismans temple, guard. At 6:30 a banquet was served In the hall, beautifully decorated with flowers and ferns. A splendid ad dress of welcome was given by Ed E. Gore, toastmaster. Mr. Zelgler, superintendent of the Oregon and Washington Pythian home, was In troduced and spoke of the children in the home. The audience -was greatly cheered and encouraged by the wonderful work this order la doing for the homeless and helpless children, and old people. Walter G. Gleason was also Intro duced and spoke on the principles and duties of the order. Mlas Dorothy Reynolds, pianist, played and whistled two numbers. Mrs. Edward Hall of Roseburg sang two vocal solos, accompanied by Mlas Dorothy Reynolds. Dancing followed.
