To the older residents of the city, this cry of "wolf" is such an old story that they pay no attention to it. They no more expect an election without this moth-eaten battle cry, than they expect an election without campaign cards, back- slapping and an indiscriminate amount of hand shaking. They realize it 1s merely a transparent attempt of certain "outs" to get "in," which has never met and they don't expect it to meet with much success this year. So they turn a deaf ear to this business as usual. T0 NEW oomcrs however, this ear-splitting scream of "turn the rascals out," is somewhat shocking and surprising. They had supposed Medford abiding place. They naturally want to know WHERE the gang is, where is its headquarters, who are its leaders, they ask the names of some of the members. They don't like gangs, they don't wish to be ruled by a pack of gunmen, racketeers and horse thieves, they are anxious to do their bit in turning the rascals out. BUT when they try to find the gang, they meet with no success. The gangt Why it's just the GANG. They are able to discover no Medford Al Capone. They can find no list of membership. The nearest they can come to securing any light on the problem is ruled by a gang and now is But, they point out, this isn't a city primary. It's a county primary. If Medford is controlled by a gang, this election can't change it. True, but this trolled the county, and is now and nefarious control. QO THAT'S ITl Medford ALWAYS been controlled robbing, oppressing and terrorizing the poor people of South, ern Oregon these many years. 1 " that true- then the late j of the gang, for he, more than for the administration of county affairs the past five years County Judge Gardner and County Judge Hartzell were also ' members of the gang for they were responsible for whatever corruption existed before that i And in city affairs Pop Gates was a member of the gang, Pickel, for he served a term, former councilmen like John Emerick, George Porter, and SCORES OF OTHER CITIZENS, heretofore regarded as reputable, who unseltisnly sacrmcea their time and money to serve their city. They were all members of the gang. As for the late Bert Anderson, who donated the land for our Federal Building, and worked all his life for every movement he believed would benefit the city and county in which he lived, he was not only a gang member, he was the prime leader and 24 hours after death had sealed his lips, he was so branded by the official spokesman of this pure and righteous anti-gang crusade, e WHAT A GANG I What a pack of hi-jackers, double cross es and boodle snatchers. What a black disgrace that Medford and Jackson county should have been ruled by suoh men, and he threatened now by a rule of similar men. More than that, we now learn members of the service clubs of this oity are members of the gang. These citizens who meet at lunch once a week with their follow oitizens are guilty of the high'crime of trying to build things up instoad of trying in every way to tear them down, and are either members of the gang, or a lot of pusillanimous slaves content to submit to gang rule. e e e YE, verily brethren, what a terrible city we live in, what a tcrriblo community we call our home GANG COS TROLLED NOW, GANG RIDDEN ALL THESE MANY YEARS! How are we to throw off this iron yoke of oppression, call ourselves free and self-respeoting citizens again! That's simple. Go to the polls next week and vote for the candidates who have yelled down with the gang the loudest, vote against those who have not yelled "gang" at all. And then good government will return to this vale of tears and corruption, there will be honesty, efficiency and the spirit of self-sacrifice in high places once more and mark this FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER 20 YEARS! .fig, parents OROWNVP TANTRUMS nr Alice Jndson reale. Governor George White who joins the ranks of democratic president ial candidates, winning by a wide margin, is very wet. David S. Ingalls, who won the distinguished service medal after he brought down five en emy planes in the big war, won at the republican gubernatorial primaries. He is almost as wet as Governor White. Nearly all candidates endors ed by the Anti-saloon league were badly beaten. Ohio, once perfectly dry, appears now to be perfectly wet, a considerable change. He'd have made ten mllllona if he'd Joined ua." The message that Mr. Brady got from W. R. In the first three months of 1033 tho consumption of distilled spirits was only one-half the consumption' of last year, and less than one-quarter the consumption of 1838-1033. To make beer and light wlnea aheap and whiskey dear, la the way to discourage whiskey and drunken ness. Our method, which forbids light wine and beers, not easily hid den, without Interfering with whis key and gin, encourages drunken ness and crime. Whether you believe that ardent dry are right or wrong. you know that they are sincere, leav ing out the few that practice graft ing and bribe-taking in enforcement Jobs. They won't accept Dr. Brady a an au thority. Will you please explain It In such a way that I can con vince them they are wrong? My b u a b a n d had pneumonia when he was 12 years old, and he say the only thing that saved him was a teaspoonful of brandy every hour or so. These other people also as sert that members of their family have been saved by being given brandy. What's more, they say that during the Influenza epidemic all the doctors prescribed alcohol and that was all they did prescribe. . . Mrs. W. B. E. The action of alcohol la not a question of opinion, but one of fact, so It doesn't matter much what X say or what your friends say or what your husband says or what Mrs. Sumsey or Mrs. Salreygamp thinks about It. Any modern medi cal textbook on Therapeutics (the action of medicines or other reme dies) will explain how alcohol acts as a depressant from first to last. We have to concede that these scien tific authorities know what they're talking about, and we cannot op pose our traditional notions or our ancient theories to their precise measurements. Probably It Is useless to attempt to convince people who like a nip of brandy or other alcoholic liquor or beverage every little while that their dope la not good for them and for everybody in every emer gency. .Capable physicians learned from sad experience that alcohol was very bad medicine for the flu. I be lieve I am not treading on any good doctor's toes when I say that such treatment for such an Illness Is no longer sanctioned as good prac tice. No emergency hospital uses alco hol, as whiskey, brandy or other liquor, as a stimulant. All good authorities with much experience warn against giving liquor to a person suffering with venomous snakebite. Only In old-fashioned novels Is the brandy flask used to revive or restore victims of shock, fainting or loss of consciousness from any cause. In none of the great hospitals ot the country Is there any considerable quantity of liquor used today. If you find a hospital with a regular j whiskey or brandy requirement the cue ta to look for the boozers on the staff or In the employ of the Institution. All Japanese troops are recalled from Shanghai, that particular cor ner of China Is at rest, and the League of Nations halls the end of a threat to world peace that has lasted for four months. That is too much optimism. When an honest, competent phy sician has occasion to prescribe alco hol (which he may In certain cases) that Is nobody's business, and no body else than a physician can even surmise whether he la using It as a fuel or as a narcotic. Suffice to say that the effect of alcohol is depressant, not stimulant, as all recognized authorities agree. In any case the Indulgence of a sweet tooth should be balanced by the habit of taking sufficient exercise every day, In work, play, games, hiking, swim ming or home gymnastics. Pasteurizing Milk. Going to the country to live. We will have government tested cow. Please tell me how to pasteurize milk for child and family. Also how to pasteurize cream for butter making. P. M. M. Answer Pasteurized food Is food which has been heated to 145 de grees P. and held at that tempera ture from 20 to 30 minutes, then allowed to cool again. Such heat ing is sufficient to kill the germs of tuberculosis, typhoid fever, septic sore throat,, undulant fever, scarlet fever, If the milk is polluted. To pasteurize at home you must have a suitable thermometer and double boiler which permits control of the heat. But why pasteurize If the milk Is pure? If I had my own cow I'd prefer the milk as the cow furnished It, unless I suspected the cow had tuberculosis or Infected udder or the milker or other handler of the milk had some communica ble disease.
