to CAMPAIGN TALK AT ARMORY LACKS FIREWORKS Earl H. Fehl. candidate tor county judge, made campaign speech last night at the armory to as audience of about 400 people, w.hich Included babes-ln-arms, small boys, a number from the Eagle Point, Beagle, Sams valley and Gold HUI district, and residents of this city. People who attended in trie expectation of excite ment and a "showdown" were dis appointed, the speaker of the even ing stressing he was "no more honest ttian anybody else, and I know all the county officials and they are all good men." Two or three times the candidate declared there "la nothing personal In my remarks." The keynote of Mr. Fehl'a remarka was a "clean-up of the court house." He also discussed conditions he op posed In the construction of the court house, the renting of a steam shovel from Josephine county, the hu mane society, the unemployment re lief work, county printing, the sher iffs office, the district attorney's office, the prohibition fund, and things in general, Mr. Pehl alleged that "politicians would like to see me hung." At the conclusion of his speech a silver offering was taken, two of the hat passers being Ezra Dah&ck and his son. Ernest, of Eagle point. When the collection was counted Mr, Fehl said enough was donated to "break even" for hiring the hall and adver tisements. At the start of the meeting Mr. Fehl praised William Gore for secur ing the O.-O. tax money for thla county and that the county was nig gardly in only giving him 5000. Commissioner Victor Bursell arose to explain that Gore had received 17,- ooo for hla Washington, D. C. effort. " Fehl declared: "This la my meeting." A portion of the audience emitted whoops and Commissioner Bursell remained quiet the rest of the even ing. Hugo Daley, candidate for con stable, made a speech at the start, setting forth his qualifications for the Job and urging his hearers to yote for "a native son of Jackson county." Attorney T. J. Enright, Republican candidate for district attorney, clos ed the meeting. Mr. Enright said: "If elected I will not have any dep uty around in the road and will dispense Justice Impartially and will upnoid tne constitution." Mrs. Lora La Mnnce, noted lec turer and speaker, gave a fine talk wnicn was enjojed. Sixty-two members and 15 vis itors from Jacksonville, Sams Valley and Talent Granges attended the euslnese meeting. Plans were made by the legisla tive committee for a candidate meet ing May 13 at Bellvlew club house. The H, E. committee Is planning refreshments. Pomona Orange meets April 33 at Rogue River. AH Grangers are In vited to bring basket lunches and attend. Refreshments were served by Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Norton late yes terday to serve three years In state prison on a guilty plea to burglary. Dean Booth, ai, of Ashland, a bride groom of seven months, w,ho con fessed to 98 robberies in Ashland and this city the past winter, was sen tence to serve four years In state prison. His wife, whose kin reside in the Talent district, was given m six months suspended sentence on condition that she mind her mother, refrain from ill companionship and the bad influence of hes husband. The couple, in confessions to the state police, admitted wholesale thievery, one unit of loot being 3000 shingles piled on an Ashland street ourb, Markwood plead portyas the rea aon for his crimes, claiming that the proceeds of hla thefts were sent to Ohio to support his mobher and sister. He was arrested in thla city two weeks ago, following a series of house robberies. His method was to knock at a residence door, with a sample case of hose. If the knock was unanswered he entered and stole money. He was caught in the act of looting the Lee Simpson home, by the little daughter of the bouse, who spread the alarm. April 31.- (AP) a passenger train on th Nor folk & Western railroad was wrecked by an act of sabotage, 20 miles east ot here early today, and two of Its crew were killed. Railroad investigators said the wreck was caused by the malicious removal of four holts from & switch, An 18-year-oid boy was arrested for questioning. The train. No. 4, bound from Cin cinnati to Norfolk, Vs., was traveling SS miles an hour when It struck the switch. Two express cars and the locomotive overturned, and aa ex press car and a combination pas senger and baggage car were de railed, but remained upright. Engineer J, H, Myers and Fireman 3. J. Kept, both of Portsmouth, died in the wreckage. Two mall clerks and an express messenger were In jured, but will recover. Passengers in the coaches and sleeping cars were shaken and bruised but none of them reported serious injuries. Railroad detectives said track In spectors found the bolts removed yesterday and replaced them, and that another Inspection found the truck all right only a few hours be fore the wreck. After the accident, however, the bolts, nuts, and Cotter pins were found at the switch the soy was discovered is a field nearby. Questioned by trainmen, the youth. whose name was not given out, said he had been thrown off the train in the accident. Pehl, contest ing th tlt.000 libel award against it in faor of Roy Parr, Ashland, game warden, will be heard by cir cuit Juige H, D. Morton tomorrow morning. Affidavits in support of U new trial pleas, filed by the de fense, allege misconduct of the jury members and prejudice. The Jury members in turn filed counter affi davit setting forth that Fehl re ceived a fair trial and that the ver dict was in conformity with the evi dence. This morning the court heard ar gument of Fehl'a attorney to make more tlefinlte and certain the mort gage foreclosure proceeding of Mleder- meyer. Inc. T,he plaintiff avers that a SH.000 mortgage against the pub lishing company and Pehl holds precedence over the tiS.SOO libel suit award upon which Judgment was ex ecuted.
