It is quite likely that if you gave any thought to this at all you have attributed tt to the fact that we have had a more open winter. The truth of the matter is that this condition of safety, which has existed through out the season, ii entirely due to the efficiency of the State Highway Maintenance men. For had they not prepared for tny condition which might have existed nd out of a very limited budget purchased the equipment and tooli necessary to rapidly and economi cally remove the snow which fell on the highways, together with the ice that formed in cold weather, there would have been many days when travel throughout the country would have been not only highly dangerous, but in some instances, impossible. The Engineers in charge of Maintenance work have one of the hardest jobs in the Department. They are not only responsible for the up-keep and safety of thousand! of miles of roads the year round, regardless of weather, but are in variably restricted to a limited mount of money that they can hav to do this work. Ai you travel along the road on pleasant days you will notice groups cleaning out the ditches along th side of the road; repairing culverts; digging out pot-holes and breaks in the surface then placing new mate rial and bringing the surface up to a smooth grade. In the winter as you ride along in your closed, healed car you will find these same men exposed to wind and cold as they drive their snow plough ,up and down the highways so that you may travel with the least pos sible inconvenience. I So when you come to i siim read ing "Slow Down Men Working" remember that this sign is not placed' .alongside of the road to bother you nor especially for the safety nf the workmcn-IT IS PUT TIIF.HF.
