Either this "double-crossing" on the part of the abductors, was the final straw, and this determination to hunt down and capture the kidnappers, was the result of the colonel finally breaking under the strain, or Colonel Lindbergh convinced the baby is dead, decided to abandon the policy of conciliation, which could be only justified by the hope the baby's life could be saved, or Colonel Lindbergh has such a close line on the identity of the kidnappers that he believes they will not dare make way with the child, and that such a change of policy will hasten the safe return of the baby, rather than retard it. Only time can tell which of these three suppositions is cor rect, but we believe one of them will prove to be. Needless to say the final explanation is the one everyone HOPES, will be the correct one. Time to Wake Up! AS HAS been previously pointed out in this column this Lindbergh outrage should prove to be a blessing in disguise as for as the country is concerned. And if it fails to be, then the American people are not as sound in head and heart, aB we believe them to be. . The lesson of this Lindbergh kidnapping, is plain. The time HAS COMB for the American people to rise on their hind legs, unite as a nation, and declare a war to the death upon organized crime. TPHE issue is plain, and in importance, it outranks any other issue in the country today. This country can't endure, half-criminal and half law-abiding anymore than it could endure three-quarters of a century ago, half-slave and half-free. It must be all one thing or all another. It can't be both. It can't be half-and-half. The .task before this country is not to make the world safe for democracy. The task is to make this country safe for decent, right-thinking and law-abiding citizens. , Either this must be done, or wo might as well fold up the national tent, hand over the reins of government to the gunmen and crooks, and transfer Al Capone in triumph from Leaven worth to the White House 1 Fight Fire With Fire THE greatest single obstacle to the performance of this task WHICH MUST BE DONE, lies in the incorrigible senti mentality of the American people, their strange but apparently deep-seated passion for condemning criminals one day and glorifying them the next. A remark made to the writer today concerning the latest Lindbergh development, illustrates this point. The speaker was amazed that these kidnappers could descend so low, as to double cross Colonel Lindbergh keep the Wney and refuse to return the child. "Th underworld may be rotten." said he. "but even It has a code. If the police don't get these welchera. the underworld will." aj'O SANE person should be surprised at this latest dovclop- ment in the Lindbergh case. A gang that will steal a baby for money will do ANYTHING for money. The underworld doesn't waste its time hunting down violators of its code, for the good and sufficient reason tho underworld HAS no code. The underworld is out for just one thing money and money alone. It cures for nothing, hesitates at nothing, respects nothing. It will steal for money, kill for money, double-cross for money do ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING for money. . , . . . f TTIIE only thing that will make it hesitate is fear, the only way to stop this criminal holocaust is to fight fire with fire, beat it at its own game. And to do that the people of this country must become aroused; public opinion must be organized and given aggressive and relentless leadership. Another General Grant must be pro duced, determined to meet force with force and "fight it out on this line if it takes all summer." That is the only way. This Lindbergh case should arouse the people of this country to the truth of that statement. It MUST be done. And we are convinced that sooner or Inter the American people will do it I - ' I C H OUTER trains mark f f , V x the newest wedding '' vs xl fowns. Just now the train is crossing from Arizona to California over the Colorado river that will supply water, power and fertility from the Hoover dam, at Boulder canyon. Pelicans at the river's edge, look solemnly over their beaks at the passing train. They have lived near the railroad bridge, fishing in the muddy waters all winter, watching hundreds of trains, knowing about them as little as the average American knows about his government. Marvelous sunshine, clear sky, desert covered with beauti ful wild flowers and bright green shrubs. DON'T LET THE Quack doctors, fake healers and nostrum mongers are exceedingly fond of telling the great sucker population about the "toxins" that "clog" your "sys tem" If you are so careless as to allow your deli cate little mind to wander from its chief concern the "regulation of the bowels." Now as a mat ter of scientific knowledge, which may become common sense in 60 years or ao, there are scarcely half a dozen toxins that we can recog nize at all. and If any of these gets you not all the yeast or orange Juice or mineral oil In the world can help you. Among the few known toxins are tetanus toxin, diphtheria toxin, tuberculin, typhoid toxin all specific poisons, whether your bowels work as the European clinic clerks say they should or not. Once In a while I still come across a quaint little bit In current medical literature, wherein some fussy professor, text book writer or nominal medical authority lapses into that Imposing patent medicine style and explains something as the effect of vague "toxins," which, pre sumably, arise from "intestinal sta sis," as the suave charlatans call It, or "the body's failure to elimi nate poison-breeding waste," aa the polite achool of buttermilk or sour milk vendors say. The whole morbid suggestion of "autointoxication" or poisoning of the body by Imaginary "toxins" or "waste" of any kind is utterly un founded. There Is barely the sem blance of a scientific fact to bols ter this vicious notion. If you pin any of these 6lippery "authorities" down and ask him Just how he can veil anybody is suffering from- any such poisoning, his sole tangible ex cuse Is lndlcan. In the early years of scientific medicine which was perhaps SO years ago the measurement of the amount of lndlcan In the urine was considered a fair Index of the amount of putrefaction going on in the alimentary tract. Indtcan is universally present, a normal con stituent, , but the old-timers didn't permit a little difficulty like that to spoil their fanciful pathology, any more than they permitted the normal presence of uric acid in the blood to cramp their conception of gout. They got around the lndlcan difficulty by assuming some arbi against short selling rate that would sink tne ship and get away with their share of the plunder. The Phoenix Gazette prints from Washing ton the Interesting news that "stock exchange shorts had organized a one billion dollar market raid" which would have made yesterday the "Black Saturday of all trading his tory.". This plan, according to the Phoe nix Gazette, was Interrupted by the senate decision to Investigate stock exchange dealings, especially those of bears that conspire to knock down prices. Today Germany holds her presiden tial election. Hitler, young Imitation of Mussolini, running against the aged Von Hlndenburg. The Ger mans, thoughtful and educated polit ically for the past sixty years, by the Social Democratic party, know that they have a faithful, able man In Hlndenburg and will doubtless re elect him. Germany's decision to cease reparations payments made clear in the fact that her present budget contains no provision for reparations, should give the nation a new start. The French announce that they will not pay us any of the bil lions they owe, unless they get the mone from Germany, and appar ently dear, foolish old Uncle Sam will have the pleasure of paying Vie repa rations for Germany. As we shall get nothing from Prance, except a good warning against foolish sentimentality In war, why not send a commission to Prance to learn how the French do things, and bring back valuable In formation? The unemployed would like to know how It happens that a Frenchman can buy bread for half tVm It costs In the United States. American farmers would like to know how farmers In France get at least one dollar and a half for every bushel of wheat produced. Our far mers get thirty centa on the farm, and what eel Is at about sixty cents a bushel after railroads and middle men get through with it, costs SIX DOLLARS when the bushel is made into bread. Nobody in France can make flour unleae it contains a cer tain percentage of wheat grown on Frenlcv. soil. The government regulates that per centage and regulates, as It has done for years, the price of bread. TOXINS GET YOU trary quantity of lndlcan as the normal, and when they had a hunch they were dealing with some ob scure Illness It was natural to esti mate the lndlcan as a little exces sive. You see, the arbitrary normal standard was elastic enough to suit nearly all requirements. tolde from the frail support given by the lndlcan Index, I am fairly confident I will not be successfully contradicted when I say that there is no scientific evidence at all to sustain the commereiaiiv insnirflrt teaching that the body suffers any injury irom waste matter when It is retained hours or days in the in testine: and on the nthr hanrl there is an overwhelming weight of eviaence 10 convince any one who knows physiology or pathology, that the symptoms the Quacks and thtr i customers ascribe to such poisoning cannot possibly be so produced. She called in his mother for numerous consul tations and finally refused to keep him in .her room. Henry was transferred to another section. And there strangely enough he gave no trouble. The new teaoiier said that be was her best student and it was a pleasure to teach him, The difference between a boy so bad that It Is Impossible to get along with him and one so good that it la a Joy to have him about often Is only Just this a difference in treatment. No normal, healthy child will be good if he la nagged, -scolded and bored because he has too little to do or If he Is expected to keep lnhu manly still and quiet. On the other hand, nearly every child will be good if he is kept Interested and active and allowed a certain amount of freedom in a friendly atmosphere. The teacher who has the beet dis cipline also la the one who herself is interested In the work she and her pupils are doing, who likes them and who can overlook their minor fail ings, i The mother' who wins co-operation and willing obedience from her chil dren haa much the same virtues. Every mother w.ho thinks that her child Is unusually difficult may well ak herself what in her own treat ment of him may have caused him to be so.
