JIEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, JIEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1931. P5GE THREE T E Opening of Courthouse Work and Highway Plans Bright Spots Gram Here On Labor Survey Tour Jackson county! employment situ ation la more favorable than the av erage in Oregon, according to C. H. Oram, state labor commissioner, here with Charles H. Elrey, deputy com missioner, on a survey of employment conditions. The situation throughout the state Is also viewed by Gram as more favorable than the average for the nation. Oram estimates 20,000 to 25,000 un employed in Multnomah county and a total of 40,000 In the state The local labor market will be somewhat brightened by opening work on the new court house, regis tration of workers for which will etartr Monday. Should the Pacific highway betterment program as ad-, vocated for this district be carried out, the county situation, will be further strengthened. Although Attorney J. M. Devers' re port to the state highway commission places Jackson county's unemployed at 1,000. local officials believe this figure overdrawn. It is also pointed f out that of this number many are seasonal workers who are only par tially employed In winter months even during normal conditions. SALEM, Oct, 23. (AP) Twenty thousand persons In Oregon outside of Multnomah county are now or will be jobless during, the winter mohths, the state-wide survey of un employment conditions made by J. M. Devers, attorney for the state high way commission, revealed. The report submitted to Governor Julius L. Meier and made public last night, es timated that Multnomah county's unemployed alone would equal that of the rest of the state, making an approximate 40,000 Individuals need ing work. The complete survey, estimated that for every working individual, three UNDER-ROASTING AND OVER-ROASTING PREVENTED Controlled Roasting, Hills Bros.' Patented Process, Roasts Coffee to Uni form Goodness Just as the flavor of foods can. be spoiled by under-cooking or over cooking:, so the flavor of coffee can be spoiled by undcr-roastinfT or over-roasting:. Realizing this, Hills Bros, invented and patented a marvelous process. It insures per fect roasting all the timel It is called Controlled Roasting, As the accuracy of the hour-glass depends upon an even, continuous flow ... a little at a time ... so the uniform flavor of Hills Bros. Coffee is produced by Controlled Roasting the patented process that Toasts evenly, continuously ... a little at a time. Automatic control of heat insures an even, perfect roast for every berry. Naturally, the result ing flnvor is uniformly delicious. Ordinary coffees are roasted in bulk several hundred pounds at a time. Therein lies the cause of a faulty roast. For it is impossible to always roast each big batch to the same degree. Hills Bros. Coffee Is packed In vacuum cans. Air, 'which destroys the flavor of coffee, is removed and kept out of these cans. Ordinary, "air-tight" cans won't keep coffee fresh. But Hills Bros. Coffee is always fresh! Order some today. Ask for it by name, and look for the Arab trade-mark on the can. Hills Bros. Coffee. The report way presented to the state highway commission to be used aa a basis for allocating road work coming under the emergency re lief program this season. All Counties Affected No county In the state, Dover's re port stated, la without a large num ber of unemployed. In virtually all counties It has been estimated that the least possible amount necessary 'or a man to provide for himself and family la $36 a month or 91.50 a day. At this rate It would necessitate an expenditure of (3,900.000 to take care of 30,000 jobless and their depend ent for the five winter months, the report estimated. Very few of the cities and towns are -able to provide much In the way of employment, local unemployment committees Informed Devers. While there Is BUffllcent clothing, food and shelter to take care of everyone In the state, the problem la to make It possible for those without to Becure enough for their needs. Other organi zations in counties and cities are do ing much In the way of charity to relieve some of the needy, Devers said. Some Hard Hit Counties in which the greatest emergency exists at the present time, the survey showed, were Deschutes, Crook and Hood River. These sec tions reported from 7 to 12 per cent of the total population out of work, with dependents making from 20 to 33 per cent facing the winter with out funds. Others approaching this percentage included Klamath, Lake, Curry and Union counties. Reconstruction or betterment of the Pacific highway has been recom mended by Jackson county to aid in caring for its 1,000 unemployed. Last year Jackson county listed 680 unemployed. NEW EVIDENCE IS BROUGHT TO LIGHT LOS ANGELES, Oct. 33. (AP) Possessed with new evidence that they said weakened the story of Burton J. McKlnnell, university law student and brother of Mrs. Winnie Judd, hunted murder suspect, police today awaited the outcome of the coroner's Inquest Into the slaylnga of Mrs. Agnes Lerol and Miss Hedvlg Snmuelson before requeaitlonlng Mc Klnnell. At least a dozen witnesses were summoned by Coroner Prank Nance to testify at the inquest into the killings of Miss Bamuelson and Mrs. Lerol, both of Phoenix, Arizona, whose bodies were discovered In two trunks here. Mrs. Judd Is sought in connection with the deaths L. J. Andrews, Phoenix county at torney, and Inspector David David son said they believed McKlnnell had not told them all he knew of the whereabouts of Mrs. Judd. who dis appeared from his automobile on a downtown street soon after they called at a railroad station for the trunks. Mrs. Judd fled after a sta tion agent saw blood seeping from one of the trunks and questioned her. They said they learned from Rus sell B. Howe, brother student of McKlnnell, that a few hours after he and his sister had called at the rail road station to claim the trunks McKlnnell approached Howe with a plea for money. 4 LOCALS Jack McDanlels llrre A welcome visitor In Med ford this week Is Jack McDanlels, formerly of Grants Pass, now of Dallas.
