A large attendance la expected and doubtless many matters or import ance will be brought up' for con. aldcratlon. Many of the newer Grangers are anxious to get In touch with the county Orange and lta program ol work, and we expect many ox inem at this meeting. We would like to call the atten tion of the masters to the fact that many of them do not leave their reports with the secretary. When this la not done your reports cannot act In the records. That is, until your report la filed with the secre. tarv. Report blanks have been mailed to the subordinate masters, II you . cannot attend the Poniona, then mall this report card back to the secretary several days before Po mona. Just scratch out the aoaress and .write the secretary's address on the back, put on a one-cent stamp and that la all there is to it, ex cept, of course, fill out the report card. Any fourth degree member In good standing may Join the Pomona, which meet! with the various Oranges in the county once In three months. Send for a Pomona mem bership card and have both your master and the secretary sign for you. It will pay any Granger to Join the Pomona. Dues are very low, being only 60 cents for Initiation, and dues 00 cents a year, payable In advance. Pomona Orange Is largely educa tlonal and leads In the many pro jects common to the Orange. 6omo members do not like the discussion which follows the reso lutions which come up before the assembly. But these discussions are ' very enlightening and enable one to see both aides of a question. That la the way we learn, and we believe that the Information gleaned from these discussions la of inestimable Value to all of us. ' And since it la yet too dry to do much farming, come to the Pomona Orange at Bellvlew October 34. The Orange opens at 10 o'clock a.m., and laats all day, with a splendid dinner at noon. Lecture hour la immediately after dinner and la usually , open to everyone. Fourth degree members may sit in during the business session after the Orange lias closed in the Pomona degree, which usually laats about an hour. Of course only fith 'degree members ott. May we remind many of our mem bers that their dues are in arrears? The by-laws state that you are voting member only as long as your dues are paid up for the cur vent year In advance. ' TEACHERS PLEDGE EFFORT TO TRAIN FOR LAW RESPECT The following reso 1 u t i o n was adopted by the Jackson County Teachers' association Monday In ses sion here Monday: At no time in the history of our great country has there been a more urgent need for steadfastness In loy alty to tier great principles. In no former period have we needed poise, clear-thinking, mature Judgment, and genuine respect ror government and law as we need them now. We recognize that the public schools can do much toward the formation of these characteristics of good citizen ship and we here resolve that our efforts will not slacken In this direc tion. Resolved: That, we as public school teachers pledge our support to our board of education in conserving toe resources of our various districts to the (tnd that full value shall be re turned for every dollar expended. Resolved: that we are heartily In sympathy with the organized effort now being made In support of Inter national peace. Resolved: That this association go on record as expressing Its approval of the work done during the last year by the Oregon State Teachers association through Its various com mlttees. Resolved: That we agree most heartily with the expression of the department of superintendents of the National Education association given at Its late meeting, "That the Eigh teenth Amendment to the Constitu tion of the United States is the most effective means yet devised to curtail the distribution and use of alcoholic liquors" and we oall upon teachers of the public schools to cultivate by their personal attitude and their di rect teachings a respect for this law as well as for all others of our coun try. And with much greater rapid' lty than a certain fun-maker, especi ally adept with the pen, prophesied for Harper's Monthly that year. He drew with his pen a picture, which without much retouching could be called "modern Russia," and In places "modern America." The article, headed "January First, A. D, 8000" was published January 1, 1806, A copy of the bound maga zines, owned by Mrs. D. M. Luke of this city, Includes the story. The scene is laid in Peerless City, "on the Island known to the ancients as the Island of Borneo." And while the geographical and governmental eruptions mentioned have not ma terialized, the social customs are here, 1069 yeara in advance of the writer'a expectations. Incubator babies, prohibition, air way service, underground railroads and the Russian housing system are listed by the writer as products of A. D. 3000. Pictures present humans In scant clothing, a trifle more scant than that generally worn, but no more re vealing than costumes of the beach and other eummer resorts. Telephotoe are forecast by the writer, who has his people reading newspapers well Illustrated with them and filled with telegraphlo cor respondence from all parts. "A scene occurring 10,000 miles off can be Instantaneously transferred to the paper here." A gentleman of Peerless City In forms the visiting Rip Van Winkle: This, lor instance, la a sketch of the commotion created yesterday at the North Pole by the news that Pro fessor Brown had succeeded in at tracting the new comet by elec tricity." In the midst of the conversation a lady enters dressed In very short skirts and wearing for Jewels Inven tion models, of a machine for making horn buttons, a new Ud for sauce pans and a self-lacing boot. "The only nobility recognized by the enlightened age," the speaker telle his visitor, Is "affinity to genius." Around her neck the lady wears a chain, which announces "Two millions of dowry settled on myself." All other, women bear similar tags, and marriages, the visitor learns, are all arranged by government author ities. Going to bed and getting up are also controlled by law, and tobacco has gone the way of whiskey. Waters are eerved under higher recommen dations than are given Medford's "mountain spring In every home." Asked about mothers, the speaker replies, "Mothers, ah, I forgot. I have read of the old-fashioned maternal duties. They must have been dreadful bore. We did away with them long ago. Children are reared In establishments from their birth on a substance called cupro-lacto gune." And to show that people were then and expected to always be, quarreling over legislation, the following con versation la given: ' Such a law is arbitrary!" "That's another old fallacy," the lawmaker replies, "How can it be arbitrary since the people enacted it themselves by their representatives? This will be tne BE3T-EVEB. AT JACKSONVILLE JACKSONVILLE, Ore., Oct. 20. (Spl.) Fire, resulting from defective wiring, destroyed the Oeorge Backes' home here Sunday morning. The loss is estimated at aaooo. The fire department was called when flames were discovered on the roof of the two-story dwelling about 7 o clock. The water shortage, which has existed through the sum mer, made it Impossible to combat the fire. Some furniture. Including plancv radio and electric washing machine, was saved. The fire broke out when Mrs. Backes and little daughter were eleeplng. Mr. Backes had left the previous day for a hunting trip and returned Sunday night to learn for the first time that bis home was destroyed. The loss was partially covered by Insurance.
