BAKER, Ore., Oct. 18. (AP) Dr. Arnold Bennett Hall, president of the University of Oregon, today express ed surprise when Informed of the conference action In barring Joe Lil lard, negro football star on the Ore gon team. He declined to comment, however, until he has conferred with bis colleagues at the university. LUlard was barred from further conference play because he had play ed semi-professional baseball under an assumed name. . PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 2 (AP) Faculty representatives of the Pacific Intercollegiate conference early today ruled that Joe LI Hard, University of Oregon negro halfback, is Ineligible to play college football. The ruling becomes effective at . once and the "midnight express" will not be able to play In the Southern California game Saturday. The decision was announced after the representatives of the ten uni versities and college in the confer ence had discussed the matter for more than five hours. The conference decision was based upon evldenoe gathered and present ed by Jonathan Butler, new athletic commissioner for the conference. (AP) The Paclflo northwest will make Its last bid to retain the Pacific coast conference football championship which Washington State brought to Its portals last year when the Uni versity of Oiegon meets the Southern California Trojans at Los Angeles to morrow. Of the four northern contenders University of Washington, Washing ton State and the University of Ore gon the latter is the only undefeat ed team. The champion Cougars fell before the rushes of the Trojans' war riors last week while the Washington Huskies were succumbing to Oregon University. When Miss Helen Hicks defeated Mrs. Qlenna Collett Vare 3-1 In the final match of the 1031 champion ship, she broke a string of three suc cessive championships and 19 con secutive match-victories. In the ladles' classic. Glenna had won the title three times In succession, In 1928, 1929 and 1930. Mrs. W. O. Fraser, as Miss Alexa Stirling, won the title three times in succession, In 1916, 1019 and 1920. tl years 1917 and 1918 being omitted by reason of the war. Away back in the gay nineties Miss Beatrix Hoyt won . three titles In row. In 1806, 1807 and 1898. Men Falter at Third Among the gentlemen, Bobby Jones twice occupied two championships, in 1924 and 1925, and 1937 and 1928. But he never could capture that third one straight. Neither could the great Jerry Travers, who also had two shots at It. Jerry was champion in 1907 and 1908, but Bob Gardner won It In 1009. Jerry again repeated, in 1012 and, 1913, but Francis Oulmet stepped into the spotlight of the amateur In 1014. H. a. Whlgham repeated, early in the history of the championship, win ning In 1896 and 1897, and Walter J Travis, the "Grand Old Man" of American golf, won the title in 1900 and 1901. and was one of the three-co-medallsts next year at the Glen View club, where L. N. James won the title. H. Chandler Egan won In 1904 and 1005, but could not make It three straight. These are the only men thus far Who have won as many as two cham pionships in succession. It looks now to be a long pull before any man makes It three In a row or any fern nine golfer transcends Miss Hoyt, Miss Stirling and. Miss Collett and regis ters four In succession. Another odd circumstance In the latest feminine championship Is that married women seem rarely to win that fixture. In 88 championships the title has been won, six tunes by women wearing "Mrs." before their names, as follows: Mrs. C. S. Brown, 1895; Mrs. H. Arnold Jackson, 1014; Mrs. C. H. Van. derbeck, 1015; Mrs. Dorothy Campbell Hurd, 1924; Mrs. O. Henry Stetson, 1926, and Mrs. Miriam Burns Horn, 1927. Mrs. Horn became Mrs. George W. Tyson before defending her cham pionship at Virginia Hot Springs, and lost In the first round there. Mrs. W. G. Fraser, three times win ner as Alexa Stirling, never captured the title' after her marriage. Salem high, a frank and outspoken claimant for state title honors, plays Cor vail Is high next Saturday night at Corvallls. The Salem line-up la suffering from Injuries and Corvallls. a tough customer at best, Is causing a lot of speculation. If they should win, It would knock the title hopes of Salem galley-west.
