O, Wilson, county physician, defendant with O. W. (Ike) Dun ford, In the $13,000 damage suit of Mrs. Nettle ' Marcho, for alleged mistreatment and false detention, started this morning In circuit court, by Attorney m. O. Wllklns. . Dr. Wilson, throughout the tedious process, maintained that he acted with discretion and entered a denial to the charges upon which the action was based. The county physician declared that be placed Mrs. Marcho In the wom en's ward of the county Jail, after she had been removed from the Sacred Heart hospital because she oreated a disturbance there, when he -had been unable to locate her husband by telephone. He said he refused to let her walk In search of her husband on account of her physical condition, and that no force or duress were employed In placing Mrs. Marcho In the woman s ward, questions Protested Questioning of Dr. Wilson was ln terrupted several times by his own attorney, George A. Codding, on the grounds "defense counsel Is attempt ing to Introduced Irrelevant matters Into this case," and was sustained by the court. v One point at Issue waa whether or not Dr. Wilson had entered vie wom an's ward with Mrs. Marcho, and whether or not another woman there, "had on night olothes." Dr. Wilson , declared that he "went a step or two In the ward," and left "Mrs, Marcho standing by the window." Dr. , Wilson declared that Mrs. Marcho's Ills were of long standing and many, and that she had been a recipient of county medical aid. He denied that he had mentioned an operation to Mrs. March, which, the defense holds, was the cause of her hospital actions. Created Disturbance Nurses at Sacred Heart hospital, on duty during Mrs. Marcho's stay, tes tified she "pounded on the table, disturbed other patients and refused to be quiet." Dr. Wilson testified that he removed Mrs. Marcho, when his efforts at suasion failed and that she was able to walk to the auto. A half doeen local physlolans were called to the stand yesterday to give expert testimony for the defense and plaintiff. They viewed an X-ray photo of Mrs. Marcho's pelvic region, but none were able to state whether a growth on the pelvic bone was of short or long duration. The defense contends the growth was caused by Mrs, Marcho being dropped to the sidewalk, while being escorted from the auto to the woman's ward. Defendant Dunford Is scheduled to take the stand this afternoon. . The case la taking longer than ex pected, and It Is not likely that It will be In the hands of the jury be fore tomorrow morning. (AP) Germany's price for peace two months before America entered the war was revealed today by the state department as "a slice of France" and general allied Indem nities. The Information was contained in a hitherto unpublished cablegram from Ambassador James W. Gerard, on February 4, 19 IB, to President Wilson. It waa part of a 708-page compilation of official correspon dence made public by the state department. "Even If there Is war," It said, "German military calcul ated they can starve England be fore America can do anything. These people i have only one god force." "It you decide to make any threats," Gerard advised the presi dent, "threaten war. Germans not afraid of break of diplomatic re lations which simply means they can go ahead and do what they please and attack us If they win." Hated America The German chancellor, he re ported, had spoken to him of "the great hatred the military and naval people have for America." The German terms for peace at that time, Gerard Informed his chief, were: "Germany to give up Belgium but retaining so-called guarantees such as railroads, forts, a garrison, ports, commercial control," etc.; a slice of France through rectifica tion of frontier; will only give back a email part of Serbia, and Bulgarian can do as she likes with Roumanla, and everybody must pay Indemnities to Germany, etc. Gerard added that "If Bernstorff (the German ambassador), has given the president any other terms he Is following him, but do not quote me to Bernstorff." Peace Move Disclosed The untold story of on attempt by President Wilson to Induce Austria-Hungary to make peace shortly before the United States entered the war, also was disclosed. Secret messages also showed Pres ident Wilson offering Inducement to Austrla-Hurary to forsake the Ger man cause. He pledged that a pre viously expressed Intention of the allies to disrupt the empire state by separating Hungary and Bo hemia from Vurtrla would not be carried out. ' The effort formed a part of tho general atte-ipt made by the Amer ican government In December, 1016. and the early mo-4s of 1017 tc bring peac before t-'ng forced Into the war. Second Disclosure It failed when the Austro-Hun-garlan government refused to dis sociate Itself from Germany In ne gotiations for peace or In the con duct of submarine warfare. The state department's disclosures marked the second time this week It has opened to the public musty records that have been secreted In Its archives for more than a dec ade.
