'POP' UNSURPRISED
H. B. VAN DUZER
O. E. (Fop) Oatei of this city, for
mer member of the state highway
oommlsilon, before leaving last night
to attend a meeting and hearing of
the atate highway commission, ex
pressed no surprise at the resignation
of H. B. Van Duzer.
"X knew It was coming." said Gate.
"The governor has had a hook under
him for months. When I was on the
commission. Van Duser and I had
an agreement that If either was
forced off the other would resign.
Van Duzer waa ready when I was
ousted, but reconsidered, when the !
governor agreed to cease wild charges j
and threaten investigations. The
governor did, but Spauldlng kept on,
and that brought things to a head."
The retirement of Van Duzer came
as a shock and surprise to county
officials and others Interested In
road development. He was a strong
friend of southern Oregon on the

"J. C. Ainsworth, named to auc
ceed Van Duzer, Is a strong and com
petent man, and I believe will help
southern Oregon whenever he can."
Is the view of Gates. He said Ains
worth has been interested In high
