STREET CLEANING E TO RAKE L Beginning tomorrow the street maintenance and repair department of the city will be restored to normal, with six men who were laid off about six weeks ago back to work again, and more frequent sweeping of streets in the residence district. Due to the six weeks economy pro gram In that department because of six less men on the payroll and the cutting down of sweepings of the residence streets, approximately $1000 was saved the city. City Super intendent F. W. Scheffel said today. It was Intended by the city council and Superintendent Scheffel to have the reduced program only enforced until fall, but the falling leaves and grainy weather necessitate more fre quent cleaning of the thoroughfares and a larger number of employes. It Is expected that removal of fal len leave from the streets will be In full swing by next week, and citizens w,ho desire such street refuse for fertilizer hauled to their lots should make application at once with the city superintendent's office. Already a number of such applications are on file. It Is costly to operate the street sweeper because Its brushes wear out fast and cost so much. In normal dally operation the main brush alone wears out every five nights and has to be replaced. . It was this cost of operation that caused the city council six weeks ago to have the residence streets swept less otten during the remainder of the summer. Earle Davis, the well known Med tord man who has been receiving treatment for arthritis tor the pest two weeks In the Veterans hospital at Portland, will prolbly be thete for another month, according to Mrs. Davis ana Mrs. Orvls atevenson who returned to the city Monday night from Portland. Mrs. Davis says that he Is always glsd to have a visitor from Medford call on him at the hospital. Earl Davis was in poor health for weeks before leaving for the hospi tal, and on several nights felt so badly while he was making local audiences lsuah with his humorous verbal quips, that he had to muster up all his will power to remain on the stage. Mr. Lewis plans to continue to Klamath Falls tonight or tomorrow. Cal Wells at Yreka Phillip Gonln, 33, was arrested Saturday by Deputy United States Marshall C. C. Sachaeffer was scheduled for this afternoon in Judge Taylor's court following his arraignment on a careless and Imprudent driving charge this forenoo : when he pleaded not guilty. TO EDIT PAPER AT DURING YEAR Although no decision has been reached concerning the name of the Junior high school newspaper, the first issue for this year will be off the press October 9, according to school officials. Anne Dean and Jack Nelson have been named literary editors, and i Phyllis Nellson was named to head the music and art department. Leniency Granted Bad Check Passer James Craig, printer, charged with obtaining money under falsa pre tenses through the medium of bogus checks, entered a plea of guilty thU morning before Circuit Judge H. D. Norton. He was sentenced to two years in state prison, and paroled to the district attorney. Friends Inter ceded for Craig. It was asserted that he was Intoxicated when the checks were passed.
