STATE FAIR OPENS FOR RODEO EVENT 70th Annual Exposition Has Notable Fruit Displays 4-H Judging Gets Under ; Way Early at Exposition SALEM, Or., Sept. 36, (AP) A record opening day's attendant wu sen today as the 70th annual (air opened here, featured by a wild west atmosphere on the Initial three days, The rodeo parade, led by the Seaside Olrla' band, and in which noted rodeo rldera and old stage ooachea predom inated, officially opened the annual Oregon event. Exhibits of all kinds were In place to greet the crowds, and at the last , minute additional tenU for livestock were ordered to house the exhibitors due here Monday from the Washing' ton state fair at Puyallup. The live stock exhibits this year exceed those of any previous fair, offlclala an nounced. Fruit Displays Lead. Fruit leads all other displays In the agricultural building, aa moat of the 13 official county booths, grange and others seemed to emphulae that tn dustry. Oregon products exhlblta were a new addition this yean and the dairy show was ooncentrated In the large exhibits building. The rodeo program, starting this afternoon and which la a departure from the usual fair program, brought to the fair famoua cowboy perform' era, Including euoh riders aa Hugh Strickland and Prank fltudnlcka, who have won outstanding honors at the Pendleton roundup and other equally famoua shows. -The -4-H olub judging began tm mediately after the opening' of the fair. Ha made his home at Jacksonville for. several years and drove the school bus for two years. ON GUILTY PLEA Among cuea disposed of 1b Judge Taylor's court today were thoee of a woman and man, each charged with drunken driving, another womrn charged with r cities driving, and man who killed a aplke deer. A sentence of 60 days In Jail and a 9100 tine was Imposed on Josephine Carter, waitress, whose car In which was also A. O. MoCoy of Asbland, crashed Tuesday night at Oakda'e and Sixth streets Into the car of Mrs. a. W. Olnn and daughter Peggy, badly injuring the former. This case was not brought to trial instil the court had communicated with Dr. C. T. Sweeney, who said Mrs. G Inn's condition was progressing favorably and that her Injuries were probably not permanent. Miss Carter, who baa figured under two other names since her arrest, pleaded guilty to the charge of driv ing an auto while intoxicated, and State Policeman O'Brien, who was on the scene of the accident a few- minutes after It occurred and ar rested the woman, testified that she was very drunk and failed to stop at a cross street. The case against McCoy, who vna also arrested and jcho has been held on an open charge since, under 9S0O bond, will be tried in Judge Taylor's court next Tuesday. Thelma Williams of Central Point pleaded guilty to driving a car In an Imprudent and reckless manner yesterday on the Pacific highway north of Talent, and was fined 15. The testimony of the arresting t flcer showed that another woman and a man were In her car, that there was scuffl'ng, and that Miss. Williams drove on the wrong side of the road much of the time, so much so as to cause two or three other cars to. leave the road In order to pass. C. F. McCallum, employed on the ditch Job at Prospect, was fined vlO and costs for being drunk on a public highway yesterday. The testimony showed that be was very drunk on 6h Red Blanket road near Prospect, that a Prospect officer gathered him in and brought him to Medford whee be was turned over to county Jail authorities. Mr. McCallum testified in court that he had a family resid ing In the state of Washington whom he waa supporting, Joe Remos of Klamath Falls wis fined $50 and costs for hunting a deer without forked horns on the areensprings mountain. The arrest was made by Deputy Oame Warden Roy Parr. Phoenix Woodcraft Memorial Meeting Neighbors of Woodcraft circle 'net Wednesday night. Mrs. Rosella Watt. guardian neighbor of the order, was sufficiently recovered from her op eration to preside over the meeting. Attendance was rather small, due tc the fact that many members are en gaged In fruit packing. Memorial services were held for the late Mr. O'Toole, who "was a member of the order. Two alarming fires kept sev eral men stepping lively for & while this week. One broke away from Oscar Johnson when the wind sud denly came up, and swept across Fred Lichen's pasture, burning more than a quarter of a mile of rail fence and within 20 feet of a large barn full of hay, when with a sudden turn of the wind, the fighters were able to put It out. Charles Fields, fire warden, was called from Grants Pass and came with a large crew of men. There were some 50 men altogether.
