(AP) Wall Street turned from the Labor Day holiday feeling decidedly bearlah to day. Continued shrinkage of dividends and lack of signs of a vigorous au tumn revival of general business ac tivity, prevented any change of trend In stocks, and prices declined about as sharply as they did last Thursday, sales were about 2,000,000 shares. It might be said that giving five hundred dollars to each of a million families, enabling them to buy, would also holp rosperlty. Opponents of the dole aay: "No, the American worker does not want charity; he wants a Job." There la good ring to that, but what is the difference between char ity and a Job artificially created, for aharlty's sake? When you create Jobs you declare that men willing to work are en titled to a living. That to which a man la ENTITLED Is not charity. Shall the government's five hun dred millions be useoT to provide for 100,000, or for 1,000,000 Idle men and their families, thus helping the In dustry and prosperity's return? Or shall five billions, which would be nearer the mark, be used to main tain 1.000,000 or 10,000,000 of the unemployed and their families? Do you wish to placate the unemployed by employing a chosen few, In an International calamity? Five BILLIONS la probably the nec essary minimum for this emergency. Our government found double that amount to help Europe, engaged In the noble task of cutting throats. The prosaic task of helping our own people to fill their stomachs seems to lack the charm possessed by hun gry Belgians, or borrowing Britons. f WITH 2312 READY IE STORY 1 (Continued From Pace One) flclently large to show a gain In percentage. Vaca tion ended at an early hour this morning for members of Medford'i younger generation, w.ho went troop ing off to classes 3312 strong at the sound of the first gong. The enrollment for Junior and Senior high schools showed more than a 10 percent Increase for the first day over lost year, the total be ing 1141. In the grade schools, how ever, the rain exerted an Influence, dampening the spirits of many edu cation bent pupils, who failed to appear on the opening day. Compilation of comparative figures cannot be correct for Vils year be cause of changes In board lines of the gradu schools and removal of the ninth grade from the Sonlor to the Junior high school, Supt. E. H. Hed rtck stated this morning. Totals by Schools The totals given for grade schools are: Jackson 369. Lincoln 331, Roose velt 31 1 and Washington 370. In the Junior hlgft school thore are 638 and In the senior high school 503 pupils. The figures In grade schools for last year showed: Jackson 333, Lin coln 202, Roosevelt 208 and Washing ton 343. The decrease will be more than made up tomorrow, the school au thorities believe. The rain Is blamed for the absence of many younger children, and the holiday weekend for the failure of others to be present for the first day. With the opening of school this morning, two new buildings, the Senior high school on South Oakdale and Dakota, and the new Washington school on Dakota and Melrose went Into servlos. A new annex has also been added to the Roosevelt building since the close of school last spring. t Flying Bullets Endanger Lives Chicago Pupils CHICAGO, Sop. 8.
