PXGE THREE I Meteorological Report Forecast i Medfora and vicinity: Tonight and Friday fair; little change In tem perature. Oregon: Fog on coast, otherwise fair; little change. Local Data Lowest temperature this morning, 60 degrees. 1MEDF0RD If&TL TRTBT7XE. rEDFORD, ' OREGON. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1031. V To the Editor: I have been asked tor my reaction to the action of the County Court In cutting down the inspection iorce. Space will not permit my going deep ly Into the matter, but, after twenty seven years residence In the vally and all but ten of these as a membr of the now defunct state board of horti culture I want to say that I have never seen a more retrogressive and dangerous action taken by the coun ty court of Jackson county. I do not question the motives of the court and accept their explanation at face val ue I am sure they want us to. So, also, do I accept the statement that the county Judge made to me: "Well, that's all right. I don't know one bug from another, but this is a matter of economy." Accepting that fact, Isn't it rather dangerous to subject our county to the dangers of these "bugs' through pure Ignorance of what damage can be done and the consequent losses sustained, on the mere -ground of "economy?" Law Is Specific Briefly the laws say that these "huge" must be fought, that certain products shall not enter the county without inspection and certain pro ducts shall not leave the county without the same. It is up to the state and the county to adequately provide this service or repeal the laws. For instance: no hay or pota toes can be removed from Jackson county without a certificate. No one can sell strawberry plants without In spection of the field and certification. No household goods may leave Jack son county with certificate. Nursery stock, bulbs, plants, plant products must be Inspected and certified. All fruits and vegetables brought into the county must be held for in spection before being released, also every plant bulb and other products must be held for inspection. This means that every freight and express office In the county and the poBt offlces must have prompt and ade quate inspection. That is the law. Cause of Quarantine But what does this mean to the people generally and to the farmer? The latter says that a "fruit inspec tor" does not help him. They don't know "one bug from another" and admit it. They don't know that the presence of the alfalfa weevil is re- aDonBlble for the fact that their spuds have to be certified to and that a certificate has to accompany house hold sroods leaving the county, that It is the principal reason (aside from the Mediterranean fly) tor the estab lishment of the quarantines on our horders. In the last few months shipments of vegetables from California have been intorceptd by our inspectors containing vegetable weevil. The in fested stock was burned up or return- ed. ThlB insect will cause terrible losses if it gets a hold here. It at- tacks manv vegetables, weeds and : pear trees. The intercepted shipments - might have .Introduced them here The potato tuber moth has been kept out of the state merely by efficient Inspection and, believe me, the farm er will pay dearly If it geta in here, . The Inspectors have condemned hun- Temperature a year Hlgest 06; lowest 63. ago today: Total precipitation since September 1, 1931, .00 inches. Inspectors Give Aid , Every day the Inspectors help the people of the county by preventing the introduction of dangerous pests and diseases and by aiding them In getting clean plants, bulbs and oth er products. It would take a full page for me to give Just a fair resume of their activities but when one consid ers that there are over 20.000 acres of orchards to be closely watched be sides the thousands of acres of agri cultural lands it Is the height of the ridiculous to suppose that one In spector can even begin to cover the field. And when one considers, the prevalence of blight In the orchards and the necessity of a good clean-up this fall one can only stand aghast at the possibilities of disaster.
