Stewart Patterson and Guests Home from Fiesta Stewart Patterson has returned from Santa Barbara, where he attended the fiesta, accompanied by Edwin IJedy of St. Paul, who has been hie house guest for a portion of the summer, and Raymond Hardenburgh. who Join ed the two In Santa Barbara. Mr. Ltedy plans to leave tomorrow for his home and Messrs. Patterson and Har denburgh will leave for the east some time this week end. Miss Bernadlno Young was the Inspiration for a handkerchief shower given at the home of Mrs. Maynard Putney of Medford, on Monday evening of this week. Miss Irene Standley assisted Mrs. Putney In entertaining. Those present were Misses Winnie Schnack. Delia Mast and Bernadlne Young, and Mrs. Sylvester Stevens of Phoenix, and Miss Edna Hlldebrand of Med ford. and the hostess. Miss Irene Standley of Phoenix, and Mrs. May nard Putney of Medford. The evening was spent playing games, after whlcn reiresnments were served. Miss Young was the recipi ent of many lovely handkerchiefs. She has been attending the Com mercial school In Los Angeles during the past winter, and Is home for the short vacation. She will leave here Sunday to return to school. Garden Club Event Arouses Much Interest. Very young folk and all their garden minded elders are anticipat ing the all-day celebration to be held In the city park Friday, com- nllmentliuc members of the 4-H Garden club. The flower displays will be ranged at 10 o'clock and followed by a tour of adult gardens. A pic nic dinner will be served at noon and followed by a program at which nrlzes will "be awarded 4-H club members growing the best gardens during the past year. OF 53 YEARS AGO Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Harrison, who reside at 838 Bennett, this city, today celebrated their fifty-third wedding anniversary, when a number of their friends and relatives called during the day. The couple haa resided In Medford for the past ten years. They were married near Manches ter, England September 2. 1878. where tfiejr lived for fourteen months before sailing for America. Upon ar. riving In this country, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison made their home in Kansas City, Kans., for one year and nine months before moving to Mansfield. Ohio where they made their home for three or four years. Mrs. Harrison was 73 years old last January 29, and Mr. Harrison was 7 on May 19. They have five sons ana seven grandchildren. Their son Herbert la shipping clerk for the Pelican Bay Lumber com pany at Klamath Falls, and Clifford Is in the hardware business at Laurel, Neb. Harry Harrison Is distributing agent for the Shell Oil company In Ashland, and Lee resides on a farm near Martin, 8. D. Their youngest son, Ray, Is employed by W. H. Fluhrer In this city. Both Mr. and Mrs. Harrison are enjoying good health, although Mrs. Harrison was quite 111 about years ago. She reported today that she Is now feeling fine, and Is able to be about the ,house and do her work. CRUELTYCASE IS two A complaint was tiled yesterday by residents of the "family camp" at the Copco construction work near -Pros pect, charging C. N. French, a. work er, with alleged mistreatment of 6-year-old girl. The child Is now In charge of a county health nurse and will be given care and observation at the Community hospital. A dele gatlon of women from Prospect called upon the district attorney yesterday and made statements against French and his alleged treatment of the girl Besides the girl, there are five other children in the family, and visit of the stork Is expected. French Is their sole support, so his present difficulty presents quite a welfare problem. The county feels that If he in discharged he will become a county dependent, thus Increasing the al ready overburdened charity fund. The California Oregon Power company la understood to have extended Its oo operation In the handlln gof the prob lem. MEDFORD WATER BOON FOR THOSE IN RURAL AREAS No matter how good Is their well water or other legitimate drinking supply, many residents of the sub urbs or other adjacent communities of Medford enjoy the bootlcBglng of Med ford 'a pure water from the street fountains or from homes, especially during a hot weather spell. Thetr own communities shut off from obtaining an extension of the much desired ctty water, from the city system by practically minded but seemingly hard-hearted municipal governments, these outside residents are thirsty all the-time for the city water, and there being no law against the practice, or even complaint, they are seen at all hours jumping from their cars close to the Btreet drinking fountains, or going Into the homes of friends or relatives thruout the city .and filling their jugs or other containers wltft the precious fluid, after first drinking their fill. Then thoy hurry home where other members of the family eagerly await with parched throats their arrival. Some of the suburbanites are too proud to be seen In daylight, filling Jugs and the like and carting them home, ,henc they do this work af night, and any curious cttlsen rfoubt ing this statement, can verify it by keeping watch at the fountain Just east of the chamber of commerce building, which has a faucet adjunct, placed there primarily for tourists to flit their containers. As far as the majority of Medford people are concerned the residents of the adjacent communties are wel come to carry away all thu water they want, either from the street fountains or from the homes of rela tives or friends. Medford people are proud of their water, and It pleases them to see outsiders so greatly ap preciate it. There la no way of knowing Just how much water is thus bootlegged from the city mains, but It la gen erally figured that the amount In no way depreclably decreases the city's supply. Rolling Log Crushes Skull of Truckman LA GRANDE. Ore., Sept. 2. (AP) Marlon Christ man, 22, of North Pow der, was fatally Injured east of Union late yesterday while trucking logs for the Union sawmill. The logs rolled from the truck when Chrlstman and his companion at tempted to tighten the chains which, held them In place. One of the logs struck Chrlstman, fracturing his skull.
