Anderson's health has improved considerably but he may not be able to exert (himself in football practice as he did last year. , As usual Notre Dame has a wealth of material and a hard schedule. Many of last year's stars are gone, but Rockne developed a number of understudies during 1030 who should be able to replace most of the miss ing men, except perhaps Frank Carldeo, all-American quarterback, and Frank Savoldl, the Three Oaks, Mich., Italian who Interrupted his career by matrimony. , . The regulars, besides Carldeo and Savoldl, who will be absent are Capt. Tom Conley, end; Marty Brill, half back; Tom Kassls and Bert Metzger, guards, and Larry Mullins, fullback. The backfleld was the hardest hit, and of last year's stars only Marqh mont Schwartz, hard-running left halfback. Is again available. Schwartz was one of the best halfbacks In 1030 and he Is expected to lead the Notre Dame offensive again this year. ' He can kick, run and pass and Is a great defensive player. A three-way battle between Char ley Jackwhlch, Kenosha, Wis.; Em met Murphy, East Chicago, 111., and Laurie Vejar, Hollywood, Cal., seems likely for the quarterback' Job. Jack w.hlch. a strong defensive player. Is EPf New Readers likely to get first call, but many be lieve the Job will eventually go to Vejar, a miniature edition of Carldeo. Joskwhlch was very erratic when he ran the Notre Dame team In the last period of several games last fall. Nick Lukats, Gary, Ind., who ripped the Southern California line to pieces last year in his first varsity competi tion, promises to win the fullback Job. Joe Sheetketskl, Shadyslde, O., a strong defensive back and good blocker, is the leading candidate to fill Marty Brill's shoes at right .half.
