It had originality, Imagination, humor, subtle Irony, barbleas cynicism and curtlesa brevity and placed upon a pedeatal by eternal truth. It was not printed. I hesitate to ascribe this abysmal remlsston wholly to editorial Incom petenceyou probably did -not wWi to establish a precedent ao far tran scending the kollum'a usual tone. But be that as It may, to Ignore and thus tacitly accept the edict Implied by your fearsome fiasco would mean Injustloo to you and the public as well as to me. Hence the necessity of retributive action.- (Exchange) ' Michigan Slate, colloge spmlal lata hare found that potatoes spac ed 16 Inches by J J Inches bring ' the beat yield, , The Motor Truck Menace, A UTOMOpILrE aacidcntH in Oregon, in which trucks have taken such a leading 'part, iiave become- no common that the stute automobile association hrts asked Charles I I'ray, head of the state police, to make an official investigation. Such an investigation is needed. No one denies that freight and passenger trucks ave a perfect right on our highways. Motor transportation has come to stay, and is steadily becoming a more and more important factor in state and interstate com merce. ' " : ' ' 'Ifut also no one will deny .at least no experienced motorist -r-that the impression has apparently been growing among truck drivers, THAT THE HIGHWAYS WERE BUILT FOR THEM AND NO ONE ELSE. , 'TPIIESE huge trucks, many of them with trailers, have been dashing at high speed over. our highways, taking more thai: their share of the road and cutting curves, until the average motorist has come to regard thein as the most serious single menace to safe travel. These trucks arc large and very heavy. At even slow speed their mass and momentum are tremendous. Too many truck drivers have taken advantngo of this fact, and realizing that if they hit another car, it will be "just too bad" for the OTHER car, they have sailed along regardless, forcing other traffic to conform to whatever their course might be. TrillS IS ALL WRONG. We don't 'mean to imply that high Officials in the truck business arc in any way responsible for this condition. They undoubtedly realize that it is decidedly to their selfish interest, that truck drivers scrupulously observe traffic rules, and they have no doubt done everything in their power to bring this about. ; Hut the fact remains, conditions imjuced by the trucks, have recently been going from bad to, worse. During the past few months this office has literally been flooded with complaints from local and visiting motorists. And both here and Elsewhere, serious auto crashes, due to trucks, have been increasing alarm ingly. " i ' . , - i .( . A LL that is needed, as we see it, is a strict enforcement of the traffic rules, and a' more careful selection and more effective control by the motor tru'ek organizations over their in dividual truck-drivers. ' The impression that because a truck is so large and power ful, it has rights' and privileges, not accorded to other traffic, must, be knocked out of the hetfds ipf the truck drivers. When th"t is done the motor (ruck business will enjoy the public ;good will to which it is entitled, and our highways will be mado safer, for all types of motor travel. Help Fisitirig, Tourists WE HEARTILY agree' With Will Steelo's communication in today's paper urging a better sign on East Main street to show tourists the turn to Crater. Lake. Many years ago the Mail Tribune urged 'Such action. The small and inadequate. sign then marking the turn was replace'.! by a larger and more effective one, but the suggestion that a banner sigli'folr tho togrist season be stretched across the street was not carried out. That such a sign, is needed or THAT A. FAR MORE STRIKING SIGN THAN THE PRESENT ONE IS NEEDED no one living east of tho Crater Lake highway will deny. , Not a day during ho tourist season pbshcs that from ten to twenty tourists don't wander about Siskiyou' Heights asking directions to Crater Lake. True tho turn-off sign is there, but it is so placed that a largo proportion of visiting motorists fail to see it. . Medford Is .the gateway to Crater Lake. Tourist travel to the lako this year is breaking all records. It seems to us the least Medford can do, would, he to so mark tha Crater Lake Highway, that, visiting tourists could not fail to soo it. - Personal Health Service . By William Brady, M. D. With a group of more or less Irre sponsible members of an army, nar rates my friend Jack DeWltt of the ' Council Bluffs Non pareil, I was waiting for an opportunity to steal a goat from a goatherd lh Mo rocco. - It was springtime among the goats and they were rap Idly mult 1 p 1 y 1 n g while we lounged around. : ' As each kid was born the goatherd held his fist over the kid's mout with his little finger to hold the mouth open at the back, then press ed his lips against the upper part of his fist and blew a blast Into the kid's lungs. I asked .Mm why. He was a Berber horder. Berbers of his tribe arc fa mous for animal husbandry and not for fighting. He said It was to start them breathing. He knew nothing of the science of it. but his theories, however crude, were your Professor Henderson's. He Insisted that the same rite Is used for newborn babies In bis tribe. Once I met a black tribe who prac tice the same thing wlt,i their new born'lnfants. Now comes Henderson's Idea. How goes the battle with the -mollycoddles? List me as a test patient fcr any exposure experiment short of frostbite. Cordially, (J. DeW.) Tho expired air contains approxi mately 44 per cent of carbon dioxld (carbonic acid gas),1whlle fresh air contains only four hundredths of I, per cent. Prof. Henderson advocates the routine' administration to new born Infants of inhalations of a mix-, ture of carbon dioxide 7 parts or per cent with oxygen 93 parts or per cent to Insure vigorous breathing. This Is to be administered in the simplest and safest fapftlon, from an lnhalator that Is, an Inflatable rubber bag, the doctor gently squeezing the bag to inflate the lungs, then gently press ing on the baby's chest to Inflate the bag or donate the lungs as you pre fer. Note particularly that no ma chine, pump or motor Is used as such artificial respiration apparatus la too dangerous for adults, and un justifiable where an Infant's lungs aro concerned. Our friend's description of the Ber ber method of instituting breathing In the newborn Is very Interesting I often tVtlnk as I read the records of explorers how unfortunate It "Ss that these people seldom give us any information about the human cus toms of the strange tribes they visit; There scorns to be soma queer prud ish Inhibition that prevents suet) writers from tolling the most';lnteri eating things. Brother (lot Ills Tonsils Hunted I am WrltlllD in hnn thnt. vmi mnv UsslBt me In getting proper treatment Appoint a Local Relief Committee WE UELIEVE tho best way to handle the unemployment problem in Medford this winter would bo to appoint a special committee of 40 or 50 representative citizens, to assist the Red Cross and other relief agencies. With such a committee the entire I'omniunity could be dis tricted, ami a member of the committee placed in charge of each district. The big problem will be to take earc of our own people, and run 110 risk of missing any deserving ease. With such a plan, cacti district would be so small that, it could easily be canvassed and checked by one person. Thai person would also be in a position to deliver supplies, promptly, and give individual attention to each case. THIS would would be a better system, in our opinion, than n central relief station, or any form of the soup kitchen pro gram. Of course if conditions should prove to be more serious Ihan now anticipated, purtieiiliirly in the direction of transient relief, a common shelter to keep unfortunates warm and dry might he advisahld. Hut the main thing, we repeat, is for Medford to take earc (if its OWN PEOPLE, and the formation of such a committee would, we believe, be by far the best way .to do it. 4raluiiy's I'altfrn (By Alice Judson Pi-ntel Jealousy, that moat uncomfort able of all human emotions.
