Prime Minister MacDonald is sym pathetic, but says it 1 is up to the house of lords. The lords, no little aghast, say, "No," or merely, "My word I" . The government says the removal of sex disqualification destroyed the prohibition against peeresses. . The lords say there Is nothing on the statute books which would per mit their admission. The ladles say it Is a vicious cir cle and that they Intend to petition the king. The battle has been going on since 1918 and Viscount Astor twice has been defeated when he introduced bills In the bouse of lords to remedy the situation, 1 MEN USING SCENT BUT LIKE IT MILD WASHINGTON (P Alcn are using the "mild" powders and toilet waters, a leading depart ment store reports. (Continued) The book .contains nearly three hundred designs for furniture of many 'types. His advice to uphols terers Is Interesting reading. For Instance. "Mahogany chairs should have the seats of horsehair, plain. striped or chequered, or cane bottoms with cushions, the cases of which should be covered ' with the same as the curtains."' For the painted furni ture he advises printed cottons and linens. Pole fire-screens should, ac cording to the guide, ."be ornament ed with maps, Chinese figures, or needlework. .. ; Quoting again from the "Guide." we . learn that "draperies for beds may be executed of almost any stuff, which the loom ' produces. White dimity, plain or corded, Is peculiarly applicable. which, with a gym head ing, produces an effect of elegance and neatness, truly agreeable." . Green was ftls favorite oolor and he preferred stripes to all other de signs. A Hepplewhlte room Is Irreproach able. It has lightness with dignity and no frivol about it. Hepplewhlte furniture blends well with other straight-legged pieces but IS' not at home with curved cabriole supports. One writer says "it Is purely a matter of sentiment, but there seems always a necessity for completing a Hepple whlte table with a porcelain vase of old fashioned garden flowers. Wall flowers set off satinwood astonish ingly." - Knitting Booms. , In Australia As Slump's Result CANBERRA, Australia (AP) Re markable revival of needlework and knitting la reported throughout Aus tralia.
