JAPS SUSPICION Pangborn and Herndon Cause International Prob lem by Landing at Tokyo Field With Camera TOKYO, Aug. 7. (AP) Interna tional complications arose today over the landing here of Clyde Pangborn andi Hugh Herndon, St., American airmen, and a flight of three United States aviators over Japanese forti fications. The problem created by the land ing of Pangborn and Herndon with out a permit and the subsequent dis covery of a camera In their airplane was discussed by officials of the home, foreign, navy, war and com munications departments of the Jap anese government. It was reported that some officials favored leniency toward the American airmen, while other authorities were said to feel some form of punish ment should be administered, in view of a recent incident involving three United Statse navy fliers from the fleet off Chefoo. Navy Pilots Itlainrd. Da iron newspapers asserted that three American navy airmen flew over the Kwangtung fortifications and took photographs. The news papers stated the American admiral offered an explanation to the Japan ese consul at Tslngtau that the fliers, who had been cruising, had become lost. The Japanese, the newspapers said did not consider the explanation suf ficient and the American consul at Dairen -was reported to have asked Washington for instructions regard ing the incident. The investigation concerning Pang born and Herndon probably will re quire several days "before a decision is reached. Pangborn admitted taking photo graphs on the flight here from Kha barovsk, Siberia, where he and his companion abandoned their attempt to break the globe-circling record made by Wiley Post and Harold Oatty Develop FHms. Meanwhile, a reel or film taken from their camera was being devel oped by the authorities, some or whom were reported to favor leni ency in the event it was proved the fliers had no intentions of breaking the regulations. WASHINGTON, Aug. 7. (AP The state department had no report to day of International complications said to have arisen at Tokyo as a result of flights by American aviators with cameras over Japanese fortifi cations and the arrival of Pangborn and Herndon without a permit. Department officials said the ab sence of any report Indicated cither that American representatives in Japan had smoothed out the trouble or at least had not yet exhausted ail thelT resources in behalf of the airmen. Bourn went "bush" during the war. shortly after Australian troops ar rived In New Guinea, It is told, and wandered for years In the mountains of the Island, clad only In a ragged piece of cloth, bare-footed, living as best he ould. picking up native dia lects and always searching for gold. He found gold near Surprise creek, a tributary of the Watut river, and might have taken some of It back to civilization with him had he not run afoul of the dreaded Cooka-cookas, the only truly nomadic tribo of New Guinea. Fierce, intractable and treacherous, the Cooka-cookas raid In the dead of night, traveling over the roughtst country In order to surprise their vic tims. They are sometimes compared with the panther men of West. Af rica. Baum. the Kanaka boys related, appeared to think that his knowledge of the natives and their language would enable him to control them. He settled down with twelve Kanaka carriers to work his vein of gold quartz and Induced , the Cooka-cookas to bring them food, every day for regular rates of pay. . ... After a while, the bags of yams bo came lighter and lighter."' Baum pro tested in vain, and at length when an almost empty bag was brought him he ordered the natives to take it away. Instantly- the Cooka-cookaB rush ed upon him and killed him. after wards performing a wild ceremonial dance. They then attacked the twelve Kanaka boys and killed nine of them. The other three, by mcann of the most skillful bushcraft, managed to elude their pursuers and bring back the grim story of Baum's end. 4 Edward G. Robinson Wins Holly Crowds Tt. linx heen remarked that the , genius of the lamented Loii Chaney Is most nearly exemplified by Ed ward O. Robinson, whose characteri zation In "Little Caesar" Is excelled In an entirely different role In "Smart Money," now at the Holly theatre. Mr Robinson olavs the part of a small town Greek barber who goes to the big town and becomes the king of the gamblers, only to meet ha rail thrnueh the machinations of one of the many blondes that were his weaknes.
