MAKES A GREAT DISCOVERY Turn thmuund auil s!XtV-Ohe rTUests through other sources, and the nec essary correction administered re gardless of whether or not he ad mits the wrong-doing. Putting a premium on confession can succeed only In confusing values in the child's mind. Only If a child voluntarily confesses and stands ready to accept punishment Is there any value in his honesty. Even then, the punishment, If he has earned It, should be forthcoming. If it Is Justly motcd out, the child accepts 1t .without resentment, for the aonse of responsibility which prompted his spontaneous confes sion will cause him also to accept fair punishment. . , The fact that the child under stands , that confession does not bring with it freedom from respon sibility will tend only to make him unduly secretive if the punishment he receives Is harsh. All that is necessary when a child has done wrong Is that he should, as far as Is within his ability, make good any material harm done, and honestly wish to mend his ways. FLIGHT 0' TIME at Crntir lake during month of July. ' Small boys set fire to a sawdust pile on Bear creek causing a heavy pall of smoke over city. A FEW mtmtliM hjio we called attention to the fact tliat the Southern Pacific in its "Time" ad, extolled the' beauties of every tourist attraction on its lines, with the exception of Crater Lake. Whether that criticism had anything to do with it we don't ltnow probably not.. At any rate in the July iime of Pictorial California we are ' tflad to note' the S. CONFESSION NO V1RTIE By Alice Judson I'eale The mother of a seven-year old made a practice of encouraging htm freely to tell of any misdeed with the understanding that If he con fesfccl he would not be punished. . , She had a revelation when one day she overheard a conversation be tween him and a visitor, "My mo ther doesn't care what I do. I do whatever I like, and I know mother won't punish me as long as I tell her the truth." Obviously this mother's tactics, al though backed by the worthiest mo tives, were not wholly successful. ' It Is not well to make a virtue of confession,- for- there is nothing about confession In itself to absolve the Individual of responsibility. For this reason among others no child should be urged to confess. PORTLAND. Aug. 7. Judging from Vie reports on the hysterical excit ability 1 of the upstate massos, the campaign should be broader in scope, and have for Its objective: How to Keep the Shirt On. The religious question is 1 now feared In the 1833 Oregon primary campaign. The Governor will arise to the occasion, following a speech by George Joseph, Jr., or the Hon. C." in Wednesday's "letter box," that the excavations for the new county court should be done by hand labor instead of by machine. There would be comparatively little money involved. Put every little bit of gainful employment this winter is going to count. And during the depression, the more men on any job and the fewer labor saving machines, the better for all con cerned, . . We are glad to say that the County Court shares this view, and has officially informed the Mail Tribune that as far as it is practically possible, all -county, work will be arranged to provide the maximum amount of employment for the maximum number of local people, ,, , ' Even if such a policy should increase the total expense of public work which is doubtful it would be justified, for it would combine public improvement construction, with the most economical and ircslrable method of unemployment relief. . OCEAN FLYING NO LONGER "NEWS" ' AN OBHKKVINO f'lNH (Preston Herald) Halcolm Hyatt, who has got back from a trip to New York, says that as far as he oould see very woman then wore silk stockings, , Bid Smith has moved back to 'Iowa probably to get a new start for Los Angeles. And that la something hard to understand. It California really is lagging on birth rate it must be the first thing she ever lagged In. It may be, of course, that she Is merely the victim of ihablt. Having gotten Into the habit of not counting her heat prostrations, her earth quakes, her drouths, her floods, her bank failures her deaths and fore closures. It la ' Just possible that she has neglected to keep track of her births. Surely If California is all t,iat her sublimely contented resi dents claim ahe Is, there should be no reason why they should not be only too happy to bring others into the light of that western sunshine where grapefruit grows as large as hogsheads and the middle western weary are at rest. "REJECTS MILLION BELONGING TO ANOTHER" (Hdltne Siskiyou Newt.) It must have been quite a sacrifice. "I am girl 18 years old, consid ered quite good-looking, and Just at present am depressed" (Lov Agony col. Portland News-Telegram) Dearie, so are we. all. (Kansas City Times) Dlamoi.J Lake Plans proposed for construction of airport at Diamond lake by aviation enthusiasts of state. Nysaa Bids opened here for con struction of Thief Valley dam In office of Owyhee Irrigation district. 'T'HIS mystery airplane flight over the Arctic by I'nrkcr Cramer, emphasizes the sensational progress of aviation the past few years. Not long ago, ft flight over "the north Atlantic would have been heralded far nnil wide,'Hs a breath-taking and hazardous adventure. . . ' Put. ten days ago this man Cramer hopped off from the Detroit air field, with barely a personal notice in the press. Nothing to talk about, Cramer had merely decided to chart an air mail routo, through tho Arctic circle from America to northern Europe. A week later he landed in Greenland, with the remark that the snow covered terrain over which ho had flown was strik ingly beautiful in tho sunlight,., and in the future would 'be a "great scenic attraction for tourists." , Yesterday he hopped to Iceland and for all we may know, may enjoy his Sunday dinner in London. Meanwhile, Jimmy Mollispri "lands in England, from Aus tralia, CHtabUshiiiK a new Bir-rer!ord' Pangborh and Ilcrndon hop from Siberia to Tokio, Japan, and Minn Amy Johnson, dar ing Pritish avlatrix, lands at the snmo field, cu route from Ijondon around the world.. . It is Hll routine "stuff" in the day's news. . THE SAME OLD WHANG-DOODLE rON'T you sometimes feel sorry. for these people who always suspect the worst in their fellow men! They must have a terrible time, seeing a plot in every plan, a "nigger" in every woodpile, something diabolical and sin ister in every effort, in which they don't happen to tako a lead ing part. Such gum-shoo "penny shoakers" are always with us, but the present parlous times have increased their number, v A FEW days ago, n group of representative citizens, realiz ing the seriousness of the local - sewage problem, ami actuated by the most disinterested motives of community serv ice, formed an organization to facilitate the best practical solution. This .action, as far as we can learn, was a perfectly spontaneous one, was neither induced nor approved by the city council, but the hitter body, anxious to protect the health and welfare of the city in every possible way, naturally welcomed this assistance, as they would any other, from any of thjir constituents. Put now one reatls this movement ; "reflects a very dark shadow. It wns concclvrd In sin. born in iniquity and fraught with more dangors than the original bond scheme" etc., etc. WIIIST-SITS-PIC-IOUS! Another dastardly plot to rob the long suffering common people of this fair city, and hoist that arch villain "Pop" Gates, the "subsidized press'' and all tho imps of darkness, once again on the "gravy train." IN ALL seriousness ISN'T IT A JOKE? And the amazing feature of the whole business, is how for so many years, the people of Medford have patiently endured it. Put judging by the past there is no end to it. Every con structive movement in this community, from street paving, through pure water to J he airport, has been simihirly stigma tised. While the judicious have grieved, the rank and file have laughed, and Medford lias-gone steadily on, to finer and better things. And so Medford will continue to go on. Put it is really rather a shame. There are so many troubles in this world that ean't be avoided, so many evils that can't be corrected, it seems a terrible pity to waste time in manufac turing purely imaginary ones, to waste energy as for the good of the city, energy MUST sometimes be wasted, in eombattinu tliem. 17 B.
