The big forest fire In the AppIcgaU section, which has been burning since Sunday, although under control and still burning Inside the fire lines, was a such a satisfactory condition today that Crater national forest of ficials discharged about 80 more men, leaving only one camp of about 00 men working on th0 fire to prevent possible spread. T!io forest officials wish to pubrfcly expross their gratltudo to the 15 cltl eens of Jacksonville who, when the Forest creek fire was discovered early In tho woek, proceeded to the sccno at once and began work voluntarily, keeping at It until a largo crew of forestry fire fighters arrived on the scene, Haved Mum Timber If It had not been for prompt and splendid work performed by this vol tlnteer band of citizenry the Forest creek flro, which covored 40 to 10 cres before controlled, would prob ably have dovoloped Into as big a forest conflagration as the Wellington Butte-Humburg Oroek fire that has causca so much trouble all week. The 80 discharged fire fighters be gan rolling Into this city early this forenoon In the trucks of the Crater national forest service, the largest trucks bolng able to transport 35 men each standing up, on a trip. As fast as unloaded In front of tho federal building the eratwhllo fire fighters hurried with their pay requi sitions to the forestry headquarters office, where Miss Janle Smith, chlof clerk, made out their pay checks. Money Circulate Through the big forest fire and the one at Forest creek the Crater na tional forest has .put many dollars Into circulation here this week, as each fire fighter is paid 80 cents an hour and Is furnished subsistence while working. It cow much to foed these alio men, provldo them with water and furnish cooks and flunkies for each of the three camps estab lished, to say nothing of the cost of operating tno trucks and tanks used In the fire fighting and transporting of supplies. Myiough the fire fighters aro pro- viaoa witn no comforts or frills, they aro woll fed, 'the meals being sur prisingly uood, with moats, fruits and vegoiaDlea In plenty.- Four meals a day were served at the camps, only two of which, tho morning meal at 3:80 a. m. and tho last meal at night, were served In camp. The other two meals were oarrled to the fire lines to the men, so tlwt little time would be lost In Jlre fighting. " Only blankets -were furnished for sleeping, the tired men lying down on the ground at nlirhtr-eo tired and exhausted that they slept soundly on anytniug, no matter now rough, Wnler a Problem The greatest trouble was In supply ing drinking water and getting It up to the flrellnos.
