Some excellent publicity for Med ford and Southern Oregon should oe derived rrom the appearance or Medford's well known American I Legion drum corps at the Stato j Legion , convention in Corvallis early next month. The locnl corps, under the direc tion of Wilson Waite, instructor, and Lloyd Williamson, drum major, is working hard to prepare for the state drum corps contest In which the leuding posts of Oregon will compete. The local boys will also participate in all convention pa rades and special features during their three-day stay in Corvallis. An Idea of the advertising value of an outstanding musical organi zation to a community may be gained from the recent appearance of the Medford Elkst band nt the nationaly H. P. O. E. convention In Seattle this month. The local Elks and their "high stepping" drum ma jor. Lloyd Williamson, were the talk of the town and receiced many news Items In the Seattle newspapers. They became so popular during their stay in Seattle that they were given the position of honor In the national convention parade, being the first band in the entire line of march. When It is considered that scores of bands from all over the United States were in the big pa rade this Is conceded to be a signal honor for Medford. In many of the minor law suits, the cost to the county , is more than the amount sought In the suit. Mr. Aguinnldo Filipino lender, en coiirnged hv the utterances of wan dering United States seiialors, has a plan. He would have tne i niie.i States give immediate freedom with self government und the other concomitants, to the IMillippinc Islands, while continuing for ten years more the right of Filipinos to ship goods through our custom bouse without payment of duty. "Your government. NO; your free markets. YKH." is the program. It ought to work profitably, es pecially, ir with United Slates su pervision gone, goods from all Asia could be shipped to us duly-free through Manila, for a considera tion. There would be no free customs, of course, otherwise the Filipinos could not accurately gauge their capacity to make an Independent place among the world's nntl.m ' A railroad will undoubtedly ho I built to the Crescent City harbor b. fore the harbor is completed, , A. H. Itanwell, se.-retary of the' N.M-tbeni California-Southern Ore-' gon Development association, toid j members of Hie Kiwatllf. club III j the regular luncheon at the Hot'-l Medford today. Justification for this statement, be said, is found In nil Inves-tlgn-tlons of the situation recently made. The work of the association, which is at the present time con centrating on development of the harbor, was reviewed by Mr. Itan well. who emphasized thu need for agricultural and Industrial de velopment In the Mid-Pacllic Km plre. which will undoubtedly come with construction of the harbor. Support of the Pacific delega tion In congress has won the support of various other sections-, .Mr. Itanwell int. .lined the club, and the harbor project seems as sured. The tremendous amount of commerce to pass throiiuh the harbor was cinphasl.ed and the co-operation of the Kiwanls club In keeping the harbor question before the people asked h the' speaker. ' The work of the development association Is not a fight Willi the railroads. Mr. Itanwell pointed out. It Is the assoeiatlon's belief that the harbor will prove nn nsset, rather than n liability to the ex isting railway system. Commerce passing through Ihe harbor now, however, has already be.'n Instrn nienlal In effect Ing lower freight rates, be said, and the develop ment will mean much to the utili zation of the natural resources found In the .rich mid-Pacific do main. Mr. ItanweU's talk was greeted with much enthusiasm by the club members, who Join him In berlev- llig "the harbor will be built." rank Dlllai d.. former city water engineer, who Is now participat ing in several engineering projects the coast, was a guest at to day's luncheon nnd told his follow Klwanlans that "people Hying in Medford don't know what hard times lire."
