BY ALL MEANS GIVE WR HEARTILY n(rrec with those who maintain, that all the facts concerniiiif the city scwaire nituation, should be presented to the people. For only with all the facto in vote intcllifreiitly on thia rjuestion, which we regard ax one of the most important that lias conic up for decision in many years, These fats, briefly, arc as follows: Jledford 1ms outgrown its present sewage system. The storm sewers are so inadenuate that (luri'itr such a rain as visited the eitv in June, raw hcwukc flows town streets. The septic tank is was cleaned out a short time ago, a very expensive operation and, from the standpoint of public health, a dangerous one. As a makeshift to reduce the danger of contagion, thousands of dollars arc being spent by the city in chlorinization. IN OTHER WORDS, THE EXPENSE OF OPERATING THE PRESENT INADEQUATE SYSTEM, IS EQUAL TO WHAT THE ANNUAL INTEREST CIIARC.E WOULD HE ON THE PROPOSED SEWAGE DIS POSAL PLANT. UNDER present conditions, Hear Creek running through the center of thu city, and a stone's throw from our tourist auto camps, is nothing less than an open sewer, certainly a dam aging advertisement to the outside world, regardless of the dangers to health involved. This sewer water is used to irrigate icertain truck gardens along the creek, and the owner of one of them has already sued the city for damages, a suit which, according to the best legal opinion available, will unless the condition is immediately cor rected be sustained in. the courts. .., THIS is the situation which Medford faces, and has faced for soma time. To, meet this situation, not only a menace to the public welfare, but a danger to tho taxpayers in the way of damage suits, the eity council called in several of tho best known sanitary engineer in the country, to survey the situa tion, and give their opinion as to what should bo done. They all agreed on the necessity of a modern sewage disposal plant, and also agreed on the estimated expense of such a plant. In view of low labor costs, and also low construction costs, this might bo reduced, but, as is always good business in such mat ters, a safe figure was adopted, rather than run the risk of ne cessitating a second bond issue. PO B a long tiiuo tho Mail Tribune bus realized this situation, and has studied tho problem from all ungles. As has been previously stated in this column, wc don't like tho idea of voting another bond issue at. this time, any more than other large tax payers. IF THERE IS ANY AVAY THAT THIS CAN BE AVOIDED, WITHOUT JEOPARDIZING TICK WELFARE OF THE COMMUNITY, AND RUNNING THE RISK OF SERI OUS DAMAGES, WE ARE FOB IT. I lilt i to date wo have been able to find no other way., And we have- yet to find any other citizen who, after studying the situation, can point to any other way. In fact, we have talked with a score of opponents of this bond issue, and not ouo of them' lias' denied' the situation reited. .'''..; - !" THEN WHY NOT GET TOGETHER AND CORRECT IT? Almost invariably tho answer that "they don't know enough . Then, we repeat, NOW IS most exhaustive survey and cstimato of the entire problem has been made by City Superintendent Scheffel, with every expense carefully itemized i any taxpayer interested can securo a copy of this report, and these figures have been substantiated by outside sanitary engineers down to tho last nickel. AVhat more can the city dot Well, they can give greater tho press, but that costs money, and we sympathize with the city council in its desire to involve no expense at this time that is not absolutely necessary,, . .., .. , They could also siwure the health, through a survey 'by its are informed will be done. Such an opinion from an impartial source should have great weight with the people, and no doubt will have. Hut after all, this is a matter that the people alone can filially decide. All tho council, or this paper, on anyone can do, is to give them the information j they alone can act on it. 'T'llERE is. one misconception that should be corrected, how- ever, at this time. The bond issue is for $-';tr,(HHI and the statement has been made that a sewage disposal plant for a eity of 15,!)'.!'.! should cost only if 1 ir.,(MH). This is true, in fact, according to the city's figures, such a plant would cost only $112,5(10. Then why $'J;i,0(Hif lleeause this bond issue calls not only Tor n disposal plant, but for' a new trunk sewer, and the cost of such sewer is estimated at tlHS.OlKl, or a total of approxr. mately if'.'L'O.IHHl for both. The balance of s15,frtH is to be held for future contingencies, ami if not needed will be returned to the sinking fund for the retirement of the bonds. Isn't this good businessf We believe it is. Far lietter to have a plant that will not only provide for the present but for the future, rather than run the risk of Imviilg to build another unit, later, at n far greater proportionate cost. come back to the point we started from. The people most certainly should have all the facts regarding this bond issue, and between now and ele.-tion time the Mail Tribune is going to do all it rim to give them the Tacts. Toward this end we would welcome inquiries, on any phase of the situation, from anyone who hits' any doubts or wishes any disputed point to be cleared... With the people in possession of all the facts, knowing the situation hs it really is, we will be content on next Wednesday, as we have always been in the past, with whatever their decision may be. Hut we will not be content with a vote iiased upon misinfor mation or ignorance of the true situation, and so wc, call upon .nr irniirni in co-operaie wim us in making such a vote impossible. Hut isn't it rather t-liil.liah to tlit-n liuvt l b-t-ur,e she 8,-IU rtmi,t Hut if eo.M. don't mean to hit their victim but oulv frighten him, why not niHke them shoot blitnksf MEDFORD MAIL THE PEOPLE THE FACTS ' their poKsession can the people down one of our principal down so inadequate that, although it it must he cleaned out again PLAIN TRUTH IS, THAT THE is critical, and should bo or- to that hag been to the. effect, about it." Why Is the correspondent unable to afford an operation? One reason- Is quito evident. The corre spondent too readily squanders money on a gamble. No ono should ever spend money fur such exami nation unless It Is advised by. a reliable physician. If that Is so, then the child Is in much greater . danger than would be the case If the object is really In the etomach or Intes tine. On that account I advise the correspondent to take the child Immediately to some reputable physician- for proper care, or If the correspondent cannot afford to pay a private physician, then take the child to the nearest public clinic or hospital dispensary for examination. Not rarely when a child aspirates or inhales a foreign body, or when something "goes down the wrong way," tho object lodges in the windpipe or bron chial tube, and for a period of days or weeks may cause very little disturbance. Thon tho child develops symptoms of bronchitis, asthma or pneumonia. IMiotogruplicr'H Ifyo for Monoxide ;;7 Poisoning Have you recently given in your column some information about tho use of sodium hyposulphite as a remedy for monoxide gas poison ing? (A. D. S.) Answer Yes, sodium hyposul phite (formerly called thtosul phate), the chemical commonly used as a fixing agent In photo graphic work, has been found an excellent remedy In cases of acute carbon monoxide gassing and for tho after-effects of mild poisoning. It may be given internally In doses of a teaspoonful of the powder dls solved In half a glassful of water every 3 or 4 hours. It is harmless, and hastens the clearing up of the unpleasant effects of monoxide poisoning. It may even be advis able for persons exposed occupa tlonally to slight carbon monoxide poisoning to take a dose of the hyposulphite of soda every duy or two, say a teaspoonful.
