State Convention of Order
Will Attract Huge Throng

than 1600 visitors are expected in
Ashland during the three days of
the Oregon State Elks convention
June 30. July 1 and 2, according
to Secretary J. E. Thornton, based
on advance registration and reser
vations. .. !

orated in the royal purple and
white of Elkdom, and with practi

purple Elk hat, will be 100 per cent

The attractions offered are nu
merous, including a Midnight Frol

golf and trapshoot tournaments,
swimming contests and exhibitions,
baseball games, regular associa
tion meetings and many other

Harold Bell Wright

career as the novelist whose books
achieved the greatest sale of any
living writer. ,
His latest story, "Kxlt," will ap
pear In serial form in The Mail
Tribune beginning Monday, June
29.
Although his success s a novel
ist was assured from the first Btory
Wright continued In the ministry
until 1908 when poor health forced
his retirement. He now lives In
Arizona, devoting much of his time
to outdoor activities and extensive
travel.
"Exit," his first novel In three
years, has Its Betting in a small
mid-western city and la the love
story of two generations. The cen
tral theme of the Btory is the pre
sentation of life as a stage, a de
vice which gives particular effec
tiveness to the development of the
plot.
"Exit," Is being serialized for
the first time. Tho opening chap
ter will appear in The Mall Tri
bune, Monday, June 29.
Although Max Oehlhar, director
of the new state department of
agriculture, last Tuesday In an
nouncing the livestock Inspectors
for the . 3(1 counties In Oregon
named Dr. O. A. Oltzen, the well
known Medford veterinary, as such
inspector for Jakson county, the
appointment moans a practical re
appointment for him, an for years
past he has been the county herd
Inspector nnd performed similar
duties.
The duties of the Inspectors just
appointed are to inspect all live
stock shipped In and out of the
counties, and enforce ul livestock
quarantine regulations. Their
terms nre for two years, and their
salaries range from f25 to $KU0
a year, each county paying the
; alary of its inspector.

(Special.) Neighbors ' of Wood
craft met June 24th, and decided
that beginning with August, one
meeting a month would be held
during August, September and
October, because many members
would be working in the fruit. The
meeting on the fourth Wednesday
of each month will be dispensed
with. Two meetings will be held
in July. Resignation of Mrs. Ro
sella Watt, as senior guardian for
the Juveniles was accepted and
Mrs. Mabel Stnncliff named.

A dispute between the company
and the Peiplng-Mukden railway
has 'caused difficulties which re
sulted in the order. Coal piled up
