The enemies were sufficient, however, to pass the bill by u 1M to 6 vote. The bill was introduced by the senate committee on agriculture, though originally It Senator Joe K. Dunne's bill. It places a tax of SlOitO a year on manufac turers, $oul) a year on wholesalers and Slot) a year on retailers of oleomargarine. Opponents of the bill declared that it flew "in the face of cor rect economic principle," and that It would work a hardship on the poor man, for tho reason that it would increase tho price of butter at the same time that It increases the price of oileomacgarine. It would not increase butter sales, they said. Senator IJ. I.. Eddy was one of those who said the bill was wrong In principle, und he said ho was voting for It only because all the dairymen in his county wanted him to. It was against his own Judg ment, he said.
