IN -TENEMENT FIREI I: ORFiOX, TrjvDAY, BOYS, FATHERSjEUGENE YOUTHS HEAR LEADER IN CAPTURED HERE SCOUT MEETINGFOR BAD GHECKl John . H. Piper, Regional' Ex ecutive, Summarizes History of Work in America Bene 1 fits Manifold John H. Plpor. regional execu tive of the Hoy Scouts, addressed an audience of 4ort fathers and sons at the Father nnd Son dinner last night at the Kilts Temple. Mr. Piper gave a brief summary of the history of the Hoy Scouts in Amer ica, among other things mention ing that "ScoutihK In America was twenty-one years old on the eighth of ihis month. Fifty-nine other nations have the same scouting program that we have, and the left handshake, the Scout hand shake, is the same tho world around. "In America we have the benefit of working under the federal gov ernment. Kvery year we report all our expense to them, nnd have the benefit of their protection, Xo other movement has enjoyed such national endorsement as the Boy Scouts. There U no other program that all churches and other organ izations endorse as tho Hoy Scouts. The main reason for this is that the movement is ji mutual pro gram for boys, a program of things that boys like to, do. It is a. real program for real boys." Mr. Piper said that boys like to "gang"' and that is where the Hoy Scout movement does the most good. With the wrong kind of leadership a gang" of boys has a bad result. "The instinct or boys Is to build and achieve, we must watch this and give it an oppor tunity to grow and increase." Hoys also have the spirit of ad venture, he said. 'It was adven ture that h ro u gh t our f a t h e r across the plains and our boys have that same spirit of adventure. We believe fa Scouting that wo may give then! adventure. Wo be lieve that Scouting does have something to give. 1 "The school man would probab ly' loll you that It' has tho best system of teaching, and that scouts carry the highest honors in school and in college." Mr. Piper brought out the fact that one life had been saved every day for fifteen years hy Boy Scouts who hnd been trained in life sav ing, that they had served nt dif ferent points In our nation when help was greatly needed. "One of tho great by-products f scouting Is the men in scouting; we need more of them."
