' Chapter 28 AILEEN STEALS THE SHOW IT was a gay little parry that xath . ered at Ciiamiiiiit's studio two nights after the conference In tlm office of Max Klein's theatre V i v l enne was installed there tcni porarlly, while Charming had moved out. "You have to award Mux the bouquets!" Jimmy Crane said to Alleen as they drank a toast lo their absent member. "Yon and Vrf will meet In a public theatre Alleen turned to Jronberg as he approached. with plenty of people whose mom orles count, looking on when yon do. Alter that, your being togother whenerer you choose to meet Is perfectly 0. K. That means no one's going to guess that La blasqua is Alleen Gray. Cluck doesn't know It no Saunders. Let Arnold Kron berg think what he likes. He can't make much of It." . . The portuls of Krouberg's theatre swung open to tho public with con siderable Alan. Krnnberg stood In the foyer, eurroundod hy a circle of friends. Burns, one of the thentrlcal critics, chuckled as he snw Max Klein alighting from his limousine. Hit opera, hat on the back of his head, a cigar In his rluged fingers. Klein assisted three feminine guests to sup showily from his car. "Is this capitulation? 'The King is dead, long live the King'?" Burns asked Kronberg facetiously as ho recognized the women. They were Julie Sorano, Al.vs Doyle and Kdnn Vellsmy, two of .Mux Klein's former stars and one whose rise was pre dicted.. "If Fay Grant wasn't playing to night, she'd make the group com plete," Tom Qulnn observed and waved to them. "Except Alleen Gray." said Wood ward. "Wonder what's become of her since that accident." "I've wondered myself." an swered Kronberg. moving off to shake hands with Klein. "Speaking of Gray," Burns re imarked to the other two, "1 suppose tint sister of hers will he here If Channlng comes tonight. Remember that statue of her he did the ono that started the ruction at (,'ban nlng's studio party? I've heard, and I suppose It's true, th:it tho slstor was the model Channlng used for his murals." "A lot of thing" are rumored up and down this street!" Woodward stifled s yawn. "Hello. Kdnn!" ho exdhilmed as Miss Vellsmy paused beside blm. "What's sll this 1 hear about you flirting with the nims?" "Hooey!" laughed Kdnn and pow dersd hr nose. "I'm Just a captive maiden attached to the comiueror's train.", ilia tilled her head lo In spett herself In the mirror of her i-oiuiail. and cari fully flit-lied the powder dust from the tiny cre.i -cut ' beauty-spot at the miner of her most II. So Tar Klein's Ut ile nmieily was progressing very well. Hut tin wax too old a stager In count on success too soon. To any who observed him. Klein ap peared enamored of the fetching ef fect of Mm beauty-patch on Kdna Vellamy's cheek. Kroiiberg's "cinema opera com bine" camu at lust tu its conclusion. "Let's hurry!" suggested Alys l)oy!e. "Max. I want 10 meet her." "Who'' be a.ked. "Ln lastjie, uf course, you dumb bell!" The entire houve was pos- sessed of tho Humo lik-n. The foyer was ulmost Impassable. Max Klein stood on tiptoe, tie saw Channlng and Vivleimo sneak ing to Jimmy Crane. Jimmy pre--f n ltd Vlv to La Mttsiiuc. aa lliough they were total strangers. That was ono danger averted, hut Klein was mystified. Tlioro was something ominous in tho ruct that, thus far, nothing had been achieved hy Krnnherg's having exerted him self to have both sisters there. Klein knew Hint Alleen saw lilm now, and he Blgnnled caution as their glances met "Jimmy!" h called and poked Crane with his stick. "Tho girls want to meet Mademoiselle." J I in my edged them In. "It's been so nice to see you!" Aileen Included all of her courtiers, quite Impersonally. ".Vow 1 must thank Mr. Kronberg and say good night lo him." Alleen turned to him as he approached, and with charac teristic Impetuousness, gave him both her hands. "Your picture was perfectly splendid!" she said. "I en joyed every minute of It." "Mndemolsellelsvorygood." Kron berg made her s bow. "My mem ories of this theatre will always serve to remind me of the Lady of the Mask." "Kdna." suld Julie Sorano, mov ing on after the others. "I think I know who she Is. There's some thing familiar about her voice" "And that's tho answer!" Miss Vellamy's smile was superior. "I guessed long ago." "Yeah?" scolVeil Klein as he lit a cigar. "If one of you guessed her secret of knocking tho public cold, I should be Interested." Jimmy had overheard them, but he was watching Kronberg. "Well?" he managed to whisper to Klein. "What's your guess about It? Did we put It over?" "Nothing's over till It's finished!" Klein growled 111 a low tone. There's a rhnuco we got him bluffed. But 1 ain't sura about It. Did you hear what he said to Alleen?" "You think he knows?" Jimmy Mopped short. "What that guy knows'll be plouty when he linds it out!" Klein churklcd and puffed his corona.
