1 havo repeatedly assorted here
that there is no such thing as low
ered resistance, or as resistance, to
any known disease. So far 1 have
not encountered any scientific evi

tion about tills.
. Immunity is n very different
matter. Immunity Is a definite,
measurable state. A child may 1e
born with little or no immunity,
or with a considerable degree of
immunity against tuberculosis,
diphtheria, smallpox or other spe
cific disease. Immunity as always
specific that Is, immunity to diph
theria protect against diphtheria
and not against any other disease.
The fallacy of "resistance Is of
cum.w not specific it 1s just a
vague notion and applies as well
to tuberculosis as it does to the
pip or what have you. Ghosts nnd
falrletf are vague, too. I might
mention other conceptions which
arc equally vague. I prefer to re

never know so why think any
more about it?
AVo do know little about Im
munity to tuberculosis. We know
sunlight helps oue to gain more im
munity. AVe know the toxin of the
tubercle haclllus In the right oses
stimulates the formation of anti
toxin 1n the patient's body, and
that's Immunity. We know how to
regulate the tubercle-toxin dosage
through rest, exercise nnd other
therapeutic measures.
Ihxt of all, we know how to
build up immunity In any instance
where Immunity in insufficient to
keep or make the patient welt.
That Is the purpose of all success

Answer. Yes, sodium perborate
bus given much relief In many
cases of "trench mouth," or as
doctors call it, Vincent's angina.
Make a paste by moistening some
of the pure sodium perborate pow
der with a few drops of water, and
prcad this on tho sore gums or
patches in the mouth wherever you
can reach them. Let the pasto re
main for five minutes, and apply
it once a day for several weeks.
Then. In addition, make a solution
of a largo spoonful of the perbor
ate in a pint of water, nnd use
it in that utrength at mouth -wash
and gargle at least half a dozen
times a day.

MAKING CHILDREN AFRAID
By Alice Judson Peale
Anyone who has observed moth
ers and nursemaids in their deal
ings with children knows how
much they still resort to fear as a
means of discipline. ;
Ono has only to sit tn a sunny
spot In the park where nursemaids
and mothers and children congre
gate to realize how nmch this very
bad method is still in use.
A little boy roams off down the
walk. He Is dragged hack, and told
that If he runs away again, the
policeman will get him and clap
hfm into jail.
A little girl eats forbidden candy
and is told that the doctor will
come and pump her stomach out
if, she takes another bite.
The toddler who Insists upon col
lecting stray sticks and scraps of
paper is threatened with the big
dog across tho way, which will
surely eat him up if le doesn't drop
them immediately.
All these threats are not merely
silly, but actually harmful. In the
first place, they are not always
effective. If the child refuses to
be intimidated, he loses respect for
the person who tries to frighten
him, and will he all the more ready
to defy her in the future.
If they are effective, even tem
porarily, they serve to stimulate
the child's imagination with ficti
tious fears, which may make him
genuinely apprehensive and nerv
ous and even cause his sleep to be
disturbed.
Furthermore, they frequently
cause him to be afraid of people
and things which we really want
him to like.
If (lie little hoy who was threat
ened with the policeman were real
ly lost one day, he would probably
be thrown into a panic of terror at
sight of the very person who could
help him.
