STORY 2 (Continued from Pago 1) of Eighth street filed by the Rogue i River Traffic organization, the or-.i gani.ation of I run shippers, which was filed Willi I ne city council com mittee on streets and roads yes terday, and to have the city pre sent a solid front in favor of such improvement before tiio public ser vice coiumissioir's hearing on the petition filed by the city govern ment months ugo to grant the Kighth street opening, will be held here January 2'J. it was plainly intimated by various speakers that the .rail road was back oi the traffic asso ciation's protest, and that the rail road had a leverage over the fruit shippers bocuuse all the packing plants are located on S. P. prop erty u-i'h free ground rent. It was also staled al the meeting that the traffic association was not unanimous in tho protest and would have a change of mind by the time the public service commission hearing was held, and come out in favor of the -opening. Plea for United Front The meeting, having developed that the property owners and gen eral business men and citizens, out side of tTie traffic association, fa vored this improvement, those present' decided to inaugurate a program of publicity which would unite the city solidly behind the proposed street opening. Walter Levorelte was chosen as chairman to have charge of the cumpaign. Attending the gathering, in addi tion to Kighth street property own ers and others, were a number of city officials lind former Mayor A. W. Pipes. Among the city offi cials were Mayor K. M. Wilson, and the members of the city coun cil ctieels -and roads committee, who are J. O. llrey, chairman, and I). It. Territt and C. C. Furnas: City Councilmen W. W. Allen, C. A. Meeker and Ceo. W. Por'er; City Attorney J. P. Farrell and City Superintendent Fred Scheffel. Oth ers present were J. W. Johnson, Walter Leverette, F.d Gore. John Niedermeyer. Attorney Frank New man. Hamilton Patton, N. T. Hodges. Tom Waterman, Perl Da vis and John L. Campbell. Grey Opens Meeting Chaitnian J. O. (Irey of the coun cil committee on streets and roads, called the meeting to order, staled its purpose was to learn whetheT the Kighth street property owners were milted on the street opening project, to learn tho lenlaiive cost of such. Mr. (Irey said that the city planning commission had giv en much time to furthering the opening or Kighth street, as well as city officials for months past, and warned that, as in the case of Sixth street, there was a hard fight uliead before the Southern Pacific would ugree. City Superintendent Fred Schef fel gave a tentative estimate ot js:!5l for cost of construction based on the cost of the Sixtli street im provement, to wlilc h must be added whet is necessary to pay the rail road for the ground, und said the latter would be less than had to be paid for Sixth street. Former Mayor Pipes spoko i strongly in favor of the project, declaring that it is one of the ma jor objectives lor -the development of the city. He Raid lie was sur- prised to bear of any opposition i and declared that "It Is unfortunate ! that the traffic association has tak en thin action, which just aids the : Southern Pacific In opKsing tual !
