The boy talked with us (mite ra tionally white we worn at work. He felt no' pain from the sthehing and neces.siiry manipulation of the damaged brain tissues and skull. The brain itself has no' e-ensaiion lo pain. 'Neither has any other Intermit organ. The pain of ap pendicitis, for Instance, l.i not in the appendix at all. It is in the branches of spinal nerves in the belly, the abdominal wall. Once through the skin and hody wall, you can cut and sew without giv ing the patient any pain, provided you avoid rough handling, tension or stretching of the tissues or bruising or injury. These latter stimuli cause no pain, but they nre likely to product serious t41unk. The absence of pain sense in in ternal organs explains how sur geons can accomplish so much un der local anesthesia they have only to benumb the sensitive nerves of skin and body wall, and to use all gentleness and care in the manipulation of the internal structures on which they are work ing. Aside from the fact that the boy felt no pain from the surgical ttvniment (and be had no anes thettct. It, was remarkable that he ret. Address Dr. William Itraily in care of HKAIX DO YOU VSK? i cerebral hemisphere may be re moved without disturbance of mentality; thU has been done re peatedly for the removal of large brain tumor. Moth right and left frontal lobes of the brain may be removed with out disturbing the patient's men tality. The patient remains per fectly oriented a to time, place and person; the memory is unim paired; reading, writing and math ematical calculation are still done accurately; conversation is normal. In other cases the left occipital I lobe and the lower third of the I left temporal lobe have been re moved without apparent effect on mentality. The intellect, therefore, is seat ed somewhere In the remaining portion of the left cerebral hemis phere and is probably closely as sociated with fchc speech mechan ism center. l.igallon (tying off) tho anterior cerebral nrtury on the left side destroys consciousness; ligation of the same artery on the right side has no such effect. The Impunity with which large portions of the cerebrum may be destroyed or removed will suggest different ideas to different people. To my mind it nugqests the physi ological truth I have often tried to tell here, namely, that there is no such thing as nerve enengy, brain "power" or "exhaustion" of either. The functioning of brain or nerves involves no more expendi ture of energy. Indeed rather loss, according to scientific metabolism tests, than does the functioning of tho skin or the stomach. By Alice Judson Peale t Jolin, uged three, had refused to coihe in'for lunch when his mother called him- . Instead he had .run laughing down the street. That evening when father came home he walked into tho living I room where John was playing with I his trains. "lour mother torn me about you, and I um tfoing to give you some thing to make you remember never to do a thing like that again," he said. Without further explanation he picked the boy up and spnnlced him soundly. Later, as his mother was putting John to bed, she said: "You nre never going to be a naughty boy again, are you? You know what will happen, don't you?" "Yes, I mustn't piny with my trains or father will spank me." With young children the connec tion between the misdeed and the punishment is entirely lost unless the punishment follows directly upon the wrongdoing. The value of any sort of punish ment Is often questionable, but it is certain to be futile unless the child understands clearly why he is being punished. Otherwise he is apt to think he is being punished for whatever he was doing at the moment when the punishment de scended. Frequently, to, tha punishment, especially when it takes the form af a spanking, Is so exciting that it blots out memory of whatever came before it. Feelings of hurt, delinnce nnd anger completely ab sorb him. If your child hns done something which must be punished, be sure that he understands exactly why he is being punished, and that the punishment Is not so severe ns to make him forget its cause.
