I do not believe any parent could be "impudent' to a teacher ur a principal who attempts such as sault upon a pupil's natural com fort, and health. It is a scandal to ' pedagogy that we still have, In some . h u c k w a r d communities, teachers and school principals who would, If they could, pen alize pupils by keeping them af ter school at night for such of fenses against tho dignity of the I teacher. When the University of Chicago announced the five year plan whereby a capable student nmy complete a course In a year or less instead of hanging around I for four years to gain tho covet ed degree, many antediluvian edu cators were shocked. Will Kogers pointed out that now the smart youngsters can go thru college just ns fast as they like, where as always before they've had to Htiek around four years to keep company with the dumb ones. In well conducted primary or elementary schools no pupil Is re (iiircd to serve notice or to seek anybody's permission when he ' finds it necessary lo Icavo the room. What is more to the point, in such schools children do NOT take advantage of the natural lib erty they have in that respect. Antediluvian is really a mild epithet for me to apply to teach ers, principals or hoards of edu cation that tolerate or practice this particular abuse. If I were confronted with an instance in person I'd use a more appropriate term for it. Now and then some judge up holds the practice of corporal punishment by school teachers or principals. All right, but should the law not give the parent a break, too. bv movidhitt that the ' teacher or principal notify the parent nnd Invite the parent to a. be present while the assault 1b I being committed ? Leggings which simply pull on and are held In place by elastic around the back half of the wnlst are a great benefit to the child under seven. ' . ' ; Gloves are easily lost unless they are securely sewed to a lonff tape that passes up the Inside of the coat sleeves and around tho neck. lt Is not fair cither to teacher or child to send him dressed in clothes so ' fussy nnd expensive that the loss of a. button, a tear or a stain becomes cause for re proof and punishment. Parents often fall to appreciate the fact that 'in one class room there may be a dozen dark blue berets, 18 or more pairs of brown rubbers and many raincoats and leather jackets hard to disting uish from the other. ' Unless each article is nlninly niaiked with the child's full name. ono has only himself to blame when it is lost. ' 4 - TALENT j j TALKXT.-Ore.; -Jan. 17. (Ppl.)
