these, and the magnetic needle as

But there was another element
of uncertainty to be reckoned with.
This wan the drift of the plane side
wise off its course. Aviators fly
ing over land look down upon
mountains, cities, stream and plans,
getting an accurate notion of the
.side drift. No fUich aid. unfortun
ately, comes to the ocean, the Arc
tic or the. Antarctic flier. Ice and
water are monotonous.
To meet this contingency, liyrd
created the drift indicator. Tills Is
a contrivance patterned in prin
ciple after the rifie marksman's
.sights, except that the explorer
runs hit eye along n fine wire. "In
our plane the indicator was so con
structed that without changing my
position I could look through the
bottom of the plane and sight any
shadow or object," nays Admiral
Uyrd. "If the wire remained on
thp object it meant there was no
wind drift; if it appeared to move
out to one side of the other. U
meant we were drifting. With this
instrument the plane reaehed its
objective ns straight as a bee
reaches, its home."
