Jan. 3 iPj Indus trial troubles in two major Indus tries make this a gloomy week-end for Rritain, today a miners' confer ence broke down at Cardiff and in Lancashire it appeared that noth ing could stop a threatened strike of 200.000 men in the cotton in dustry. The miner had hoped for some sort of compromise with the own ers, but this afternoon their spokes man aid they were going to try for a conference with Ramsay Mac donald on Monday. It looked as though they would suggest once more that the gov ernment take over the pits and run the industry at least tempor arily, assuring employment to min ers who would face great misery In a strike. Two mines have been idle since New Year's day when they stopped work automatically at the expira tion of a temporary aifreement on wages and working hours. They want retention of the old eight hour day, or the full r ight-hour wase for th 7 1-2 hour day estab lished by the new coat mines act. The owners are willing to accept the 7 1-2 hour day but they want to cut the wages proportionately. The weaving Industry is dead locked over the demand of the mill owners that each weaver ivjw op erating four looms double the num ber of machines under his charge. They have offered a substantial In crease in pay. but the men are holding out on the ground that the proposed system would result in throwing many weavers out of work. NEW YORK.
