IIKKD THE ItKFLKX AND SPAUK TUB PILL Among the many things I am Uite c,lnnky nhout Is lhe me.clfi form of request a correspondent uses to ask for my advice about constipation. For instance, I have no cure for constipation. I offer no treatment or remedy for it. I don't know what you mean by tor pid or lazy liver and neither do you. I preserlbo no diet for "coli tis' and I suggest no way of dealing with a case of autointoxlcnt ion. Oh, I'm almost insufferably par ticular about the way you ask for my ndvice about this common trouble. You see I'm a psychol ogist mnybo you haven't noticed that, but I nm. . My psychology, I am proud to sny, is very homely and not ut all Imposing. I have never even tried to hypnotize anybody nnd my eye well, my eye! Hut Just the same I have plenty of evidence that my psy chology Ih a little bit of all right. And so I run along this way, con tent to count nn occasional suc cess and always trying to sensitise the ensual reader's mind to good health suggestion. Constipation Is, in rare cases, an actual organic disease, nnd as such requires the best care of physician and surgeon. Hut In the great majority of cases it is purely u bud habit. My purpose Is merely to help victims of tho habit to cor rect the bad habit. Dr. Kdwln Iloros aptly terms constipation a "by-product of civi lisation" nnd explains how it is brought about by suppression of the call of nature or postponement of answering or heeding this re flex. He gives some excellent sug- Rations, some of which may be mentioned here. At 4 In the afternoon re peat the 10 a. m., lunch. At bed time repeat the lactose. Of course i all other artificial aids are stopped when this treatment begins. Dr. Bur os finds there Is usually no bowel action In the first three days of this treatment. He allows the patient to take a tenspoonful of gamneslum oxide powder three times the first day, half a tea spoonful three times the second day, one-fourth teaspoonful three times the third day nnd that's nil there ain't .goln' to be no more. The first three days are the hard est. After that. If the patient does not lose confidence and break the spell, everything's gonnn bo all right. (I am relapsing now into my own vulgar language). Dr. Horos states that these sugars pro mote fermentation In the intestine, and that is desirable; considerable gns Is one effect, nnd It is Impor tant for the patient not to try to suppress that. Finally, the patient must faithfully heed the reflejt or the natural Impulse at what ever time It comes, usually shortly after breakfast mornings, and al ways nt that regular time. My experience Is that the aver age victim of the -.; must he willing to stay in ino fight four or five days without weakening and resorting again to the old physic. I commend the injec tion treatment of hernia in the hands of a reputable, responsibble physician, and I arn you against , any such treatment offered by. a Jj quack who, of course.
