PXQE FIVE "EVERYONE IN SOUTHERN OREGON READS THE MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE" MEDFORD MAIL' TRIBUNE, AlEDFORD, OREGON", SFXDAY. DECEMBER 28, mm In the Old Home Town The names that were applied to the men mid hoy a of the Old Home Town, the titles under which they traveled through the. business and uncial life of the town, afford one of the distinct recollections of that early day. The inspiration fur the usual run of names is not difficult to trace. Kor instance, there was "Sliver'1 Rogers, the painter, car-; pen tor, stone mason u little of this and a little of thnt and noth ing much of either for "Sliver" who was fat and round with dou ble chin and double cheeks from the time he was a tiny baby. "Sliver" Rogers when he was In school was a human cushion fm ' all of us We loved to have him in the rough-and-tumble games so that we cnuld fall on him. lie was round and soft and greatly over weight for one of his years. It was not difficult to understand the subtle humor that prompted us to give "Sliver" Rogers his title. And aH we write this line to re call the memory of him he rises up before us in his jolly fatness. We can fairly see his obi smile and see him "waddle as he walk ed or ran. We recall by the same token, too, that "Pussy" More was n fat boy, and with that cheerful dis position and sunny smile that go with one built on plans and speci fications of "Pussy" .More. And "I'ussy" Moore took on his title quite naturally and quite appro priately. It is easy enough, also, to un derstand .why the now eminent 1 tr. Ha ni uel Pa ker was ca I led "Speck," as wo think with joy and delight of the freckled face of the boy across the street that always bore his end of the bur den of keeping the gang amused and'ontertained. , We recall now that "I loolie'' Hprigg gained his tit le tucause of 4 he obsession on his part to mimic a hoot owl. It was bis delight to bide in mysterious places where hoot owls never would think of hiding and at tempt (always with failure) to frighten the other members of the youthful crowd of Old J lome Town boys of that day. Hut why was It that the name of "Oaatfoot' ever was hung upon Clarence McCauley, ordinarily a peace-loving and companionable Tomato AFttOD; - tecuuolosist recently wrote: '."Tomato juice has introduced to ub as a bow drink not fur the purpose ot Bupplacttng some other beveiage ir of provid ing ono with sttrh a new and dis tinctive character as to merit fa voi- above others, but for the pur pose of Bupplying a particular element in the diot. It has the desirable qualities of being both agreeable to most persons and ef fective in quenching thirst." This technologist (A. W. Bit ting, writing in the "Phoenix Flame") (ben went on to explain that this particular clement was the vitamins that the body needs, und that some! of these can be ob tained In relatively large amounts in the tomato. "The preparation of the juice and its use as a bev erage." he adds, "affords a simple and, at the same time a pleasant GARDENIAS NEW NOTE IN EVENING COSTUMES PARIS (jt One or two gar denias tucked Into the top of the ' corsage, are a new note on French evening gowns. We feel sure that "tbmifoot" McCaul-; ey never climbed a high hill in his life, and when it camo to the finer and more technical forms of amusement, such as going into an apple orchard or a watermelon patch unhidden by the owner and picking out the ripest fruit, why "Ciomioot'' McCauley wouid have been caught and haled before Squire Mitchell If he had attempt ed It, ho timid and mild he was. Who was inspired to give the lifetime title to Albert Iloskin of "Mildew," who always dressed, like a sissy ? There was "Red" Kel ley, whose complexion and hair, suggested the title. Rut ' "Red" Kolley had a brother, also with red hair and red face and a fiery red temper, loo. Who gave, and for what purpose, that boy the name of "Sis" Kelley? We never have been able to explain the reason for calling that JJlakely boy Homer, as wo recall it "Mud" Itlakely. The title has clung to Homer IJlakely for more than a half century, if we are good at figures (which, heaven forbid, we are not). And there were "Puny" Bloom field and "Simp" Larson and "Budge" Bradford, and "Pig" Wil son, young rascals all, who grew up. went out into the world and made themselves useful, for the most part, to their fellow men. What explanation is there for the ill-assorted, meaningless, unfitting names that they carried out of the Old Homo Town? And why is It that, in recalling them with frequency because of some incident in life, meeting some one of the old gang for a re-union, or reading some "local happenings" in the Old Home paper, we think of them nut by their real names, but by the names that were given them in that old day names that were handed to them not so much in derision as in devotion ? For, as wo recall it. the boys that never were ad mitted to the full fellowship of the gang never were nicknamed. I very title that was borne out from tho Old Home Town, how ever incongruous, however the misfit, really was a title of love and endearment. Kansas City Star. Vitamins means of supplying this ingred ient." Easy to Make There are several types and brands of ready prepared tomato juice on the market, and it is also easy to make from canned toma toes. All you have to do is to strain the liquid portion of the contents of a car through a fine strainer. To make a peppy cocU tail of this product, add to it a tablespoon cf sauce consisting of a pinch of. salt, two-thirds table spoon catsup, one-half teaspoou Worcestershire sauce, one-fourth teaspoou horseradish, one table" spoon chili sauce and a dash of tabasco. Mix these ingredients together very thoroughly before adding the required amount to the tomato juice. Mix, chill, and servo in small glasses. BRIDE CARRIES !
