The. friends. chosen on the basis. of newly emerging adolescent in terests may appear to parents to possess not one saving grace of perwflnality. They cannot understand why It is that their hitherto sensible 13-year-old daughter has suddenly be come fascinated by the unpleasant ly I6ud and sophisticated g'il next door. , . They forge't that this girl may well represent -to their daughter certain wholly natural interests which their own training has per haps ignored, To the parent who is distressed over the vagaries of his children's choice of friends It should be com forting to reflect that there is noth ing final about friendships. They come and go, leaving be hind them very little permanent ef feet. No slnirle association h.is the power to Inflict real harm so long as the training of early childhood has h4on sound nnd the relation ship hotween parents and children continues to he one of understand ing nnd mutual trust.
