Bob Daniels appeared suddenly at Fanny's elhnw, dressed in a shape less while gown and completely masked with a gi itmlug dealli'a head. Kfliiny did nut recognize 111 in until ):e whimpered his Identity to lir. "Von didn't think, did you. that 1 would go away without a good-by?" he asked while they were dancing. "I didn't know. 1 re It dreadfully abused. Are you actually going to night?" m "1 actually am. My car's outside with nj y trunk strapped on (lie back. Leila got suspicious kept Bitcn a watch on me I had to let it down out "Are you actually going tonight?" of my window by a rope and stain down ' myaelf." He laughed glee fully. , . . , . "I ought to scold you," aald Fanny, "but I can't.' 1 don't believe you are much over set en years old." Hlta was Immediately happier, now that Dob-had not gone off without a word ot. farewell. Her black deprcs sfon.'Whloli she bad been fighting hectically all evening, showed a sil ver edge: at least she waa of para mount Importance to someone. A passing waiter cached a tray of glasses filled with champagne be hind a-palm and Fanny drank one glass, then two. It waa tucJ) a good Joke on the waiter. A little Inter she made no Abjection when Bob guided Iter through a side door, down the stops and along the path to the sunken garden. The little garden might Itself have been a ghost in the moonlight the ghost ot a mora romantic, mora fan ciful, more mettlesome age. An an cient figure ot Pan played on his pines and watched them covertly. To Fanny be teemed to be laughing to himself, mocking their youth and dreams and trivial groplngs after the stars. "Do you ':now what that old boy Is soylng?" sked Bob, taking Fanny's hand. "Tell me." "He says that he Is incredibly old and Incredibly wlso: that be has out lived all the old gods and will outlive all the new. His message to us Is to snatch at the rosebuds as they ciime our way to eat and drink and laughlnd love our fill, while there is 'till spring In our heart; for autumn is JiMt around the corner and our barks soon will be bowed and Our iiloml run cold." "My blood's running Ice this mln. ule und I don't like your old friend Take tne back." said Fanny. "In a mlnule iio slny a minute," Hull coaxed. Klie couid never recall very clear iy that quarter ol an huiir. There wait haie over everything she had Qght to And her thoughts, to speak varly. Out It did not nutter: ill would tain care ot her. Il was because she bail never expected to see bim again. It was true too. as Bub pointed out. that David did nut love her. that neither lie nor Klia was hapiiy: that tlieir marriage was one long mistake. Sbe began to cry. Bob covered her hand with kisses, comforted her weeping with pity for David murmured endearments, dried her tears and drew ber close, assuring i.tr gently that If sbe loved bim. Inved hi in even a little, there was no shadow of a reason why everyone should not be happy. Lei la's and David's pride might be a little hurt ut first, but Fanny could not imagine that either would be hurt deeply. . . . All the time there was beating, heating through Fanny's mind, just below all these other thoughts, the thought of Sheila her baby. She did not want to face It, but It was there like iieartbeats. Bob went oo urging. Tomorrow a ship sailed from New York for Mex ico. And In Mexico anyone could be divorced In two weeks. In two weeks they would be free everybody free, everybody happy. As Bob told It. It sounded extremely simple and rea sonable. By going to Mexico with Bob, Fanny could make David bappy set him free. Fanny asked Bob at they danced. "But ot course, there' Sheila," Fanny protested. , Bob argued that only by summou ing courage to break away would Fanny ever be able to give Sheila the happy childhood whlob waa ber due. When Fanny was free Sheila's lite would no longer be poisoned by the broath ot strife and the tyranny of David's mother. Now Fanny listened with a new sense of Bob's wisdom; the followed bis words as In dreams we accept some formula that seema to explain the universe. Bob had thought of everything. He told hnw. once be and Fanny were married, he would come back, steal Sholln and spirit her over the border to Canada. Fanny Insisted that they take Sheila along in the first place, but Bob said firmly that was impossible. Fanny still hesitated, held even iu her bofngged slate by the dread ot separation from ber child. Boh nuked her curtly If she did not love Shnlla enough to run a little risk fur her? Or was ahe willing that Sltolla ahould spend all ber young formative years hampered and hodged and curbed by a thousand ancient prejudices, by potty aiming regulations? Heavens above, aid site want Sheila to be a BrownbeckT That waa. the nnal argument, Fanny did not wuni Sheila to be a Brownbeck. Sho would free David, rescue Sltolla, make Boh happy evuryhoily happy, except herself. But what did it matter about her self? David didn't love her, David didn't want hor. Nobody wanted ber but Bob. Hub led her !u the car sob bing; and clinging wildly to him. live minutes later, wrapped to the eyes In furs, they were speeding down the long white track ot the state road. It was glorious Fanny laughed out loud. Forty, CO, GO miles an hour bathed In moonlight, be tween walls nf black and leafless trees which lined the way solidly. What did Anything mutter b it this? This was love. She was in love with Hob and had not known till now She wanted In scream aloud that sbe was tree, free of the Uiowubccks. Forever and ever! K inter, faster! Seventy miles.
