He wins no great publle H.vinpatliy thereby, and any pop ularity campaign on his part would be as fruitless ns it would he necessary. The soup kitehen is i lire generosity. I5ut gats and machine guns enable Mr. Capone to indulge this kindly quality. 1 And, let it be understood, the lethal weapons of gangland arc employed in a manner that has no romance in it. ' ' " .,. THE easiest'uud Kufest man to terrorize is the man who has no friends, little money, no means of defense. Such persons small tradesmen, workmen, petty, grafters filling obscure jobs in one racket or another are the persons gangland terrorizes. Gangland, when it kills, kills on the same 'principle. The easiest and safest way to kill a man is to put hiiii on the spot, nil un aware, defenseless, alone. That is the' way gangland uses its machine guns and gats. Gangland 's displays, flaunting the profits of lawlessness in the face of lawful society, are picturesque. Hut they arc also ugly. Their ugliness i the more iiielusivo and more important quality. Commercialized crime is a Sordid, mean-spirited and thor oughly contemptible business., phrysanthomums bought by mur der easy, safe, cold-blooded murder ought to he displayed only with the price tag on them. San Diego Union. ' SHOWS A DVKH.SFTY, not prosperity, brings oiil a nation's real strength, says l'aul Shoup, president of the Southern Pa cific. Forty-two million Americans who are normally, gainfully employed, without counting those who nre gainfully employed in "marathon races, tree-sitting and on the miniature golf courses," are being brought to their senses, Mr. Shoup believes. His own Observation shows that depression is relative. There is a business depression for some all of the time, and for all of the people some of the time. The waiter who asked him the cause of the Wall Street panic and was told that it was a finan cial crisis for a number of people, answered: "Oh, that doesn't menu anything to mi!. I have one of those nt the end of every nioiiih." . SO, AVlfliOUT indulging in ideals of the I'ollyaima sort, the head of the big railroad company says times require co-operation, not panaceas. And: ' The strongest elements of character, self-discipline, a reali zation of oblignti'Uis, the extending of a helping hand where needed, a co-ordination of 6ur views .sonstructivjly with those of othersj'theso and other calls tipon character, upon our cour age, our resourcefulness, our understanding and our kindliness find, in the response, Whether or no we arc truly a great people or merely niake-fieliovej of the fair weather variety. Wise words these, but not wiser than Mr. jShoup's proposal that private business, as vcl ns . government agencies, do all in its power to show that resourcefulness in the hour of test that best assures the better tomorrow. THE PARDON CASE N ITS incessant striving for sensations, tho Portland Telegram l is savagely attacking Governor Norblad for having pardoned Charles Vonderahe, convicted of tilla county and sentenced in l!)2i! to life imprisonment, and is trying to manufacture' n scandal out of it. , As to the guilt or innocence of Vonderahe, wc know nothing, but 'we know there was b strong presumption of innoeence in the evidence laid before the Governor, who exercised his discre tion to the best of his judgment, as ho is supposed to do. . Teh of the 'trial jurors petitioned for pardon, as did over 400 people of filial ilia county. Senator Steiwer, who was a defense attorney, slated that there are guilt and that n pardon would he "an act of simple justice. The trial judge admitted that u mistake might have been made. The sheriff of Walla WallH county, closely identified with the ease, sat- that (he real murderer is still at large and Vonderahe is in nocent. Other testimony along the same line is in the record. Governor Xorhlad in nearly a year of office has issued 17 pardons with a record prison population, fewer than any of his Vredeeessors, and cannot be a.'cused of undue activity in empty ing the prison.Saleiit (,'apital - Another improvement. Were it not for the annoy ing moral and legal drawbacks, this solution, at least to my mind, would be entirely adequate. S1 Parents ANTAGONISMS 1 By Alice Judson Peale ' The antagonisms which exist be twoen parents and children and be tween brothers and sisters nre not generally admitted, although they are always present in every family in greater or less degree. Children cause their parents in evitable limitations lu personal freedom and in the pursuit of pleasure. They demand sacrifices in time, energy and money. Only a really mature individual is in a position to meet the de mands of parenthood without feel ing a certain amount of resentment toward the child who occasions them. ' Then, too, there are the antago nisms which arise from the real or fancied resemblance of a child to some relative with whom the parent has unpleasant associations. Many a boy or girl grows up re minded constantly that he is just like an uncle or an nunt or a grand parent who was a ne'er-do-well. Perhaps the most common and persistently unrecognized cause, ol' antagonism in the family circle is found in Jealousy. One parent is jealous of the attention which the other parent lavishes upon a child. Brothers and sisters are jealous of eacli other because of tho un equal distribution of affection and attention. Parents who are not in harmony with each other frequently project their difficulties upon their chil dren, centing .their unhappiness and. disappointment upon the pro duct of their unsatisfactory union. To he fully aware of what an tagonisms actually exist ' in the circle of our own home is to be able in some degree to control the situation. f TABLE MOCK, Ore.. Dec. 20. (Spl.) Chas.
