grizzly lwar In Jackson county. It

1'ltt In tho spring of 1892. Jtealo
and Jimpcr Tungato went hunting
for deer on Willow prairies and
Juniper ridge, six miles west of
Mt, IPItt. They were on horseback
and had two dogs with them, when
ltpalo looked ahead and saw tho
grizzly.
"Tho bear was about 300 yards
away," said Jim In recounting tho
story, "ho illoale told Tungate to
stay there with tho horses and tho
dogs. Healo slipped up to within
100 yards of tho grizzly when tho
bear started to run. Bealo fired
tho old .45-70 Springfield rifle, hit
ting tho lwar in tho left foreleg.
This started lllm bleeding, and
made it easy to follow In tho snow.
Tho dogs couldn't stop him, so they
turned back, ns Tungato was a boy
of only 10 or 12 years. As soon
as they found Art Nichols, who also
had some dogs, ho and Bealestart
ed out after the bear, while Tun
gate stayed at Nichols' place. The
old grizzly mode for Mt. Pitt and
there the boys and the dogs rout
ed him out. Tho bear started for
Cat hill, and every llttlo bit Itr.
Hear would stop to rest. When
the boys got near him, ho would
inovo on again.-
"Tho dogs couldn't do anything
with him, and tho boys didn't daro
shoot for fear of hitting ono of the
dogs. IFInally, tho boys camo up
on the "bear, lying down. : Bealo
and Nichols slipped up to within
10 feet, and both fired at the
grizzly's head. Ho rolled ovor,
gasped and died. Just as ho took
his last breath, ono of tho. dogs
slipped Into tho bear's Jaws - and
received a crushed leg and shoul
der for his foolishness. " Tho boys
had traveled 12 tulles before tho
grizzly gave 'up. and by that tlmo
It was getting Into In tho evening.
Tho next dny they went back with
a wagon and drove within two
miles of tho henr. They used pack
horses to bring tho meat to tho
wagon. Tho stockmen gavo tho
boys H00 for killing tho grizzly
and they sold tho hldo for G0.
including tho salo of tho Inrd and
meat, they received nearly $200
for tholr trouble. Tho bear weigh
ed 1600 pounds.

Jim wan once a sheepherder and
recalled trouble with coyotes. "One
day I had tho sheep -on what wo
railed tho Heeso desert," ho said.
'and they were watched carefully
to keep tho coyotes off. 1 saw a
oyoto slipping along toward the
sheep. Whenever they saw him.
I hoy would atop eating and watch
him, Tho coyoto would also re
main milet. The', sheep fed all
around Iho varmint and 1 Jumped
on my horso and Into tho herd I
went. T saw tho coyote- mako a
grab nt one. 1 cut loose with my
gun and fired six shots In less time
than It takes to loll. 1 killed three
sheep, but never touched tho coy
ote, llo niado a quick escape and
I got good and mad. 1 dragged tho
sheep Into somo-brush and I guess
tho bones are still there. Tho next
morning I hid behind a blind and
soon saw' two coyotes. 1 fired tho
gun and killed both with tho sanio
bullet. I killed soma more later
and tho sheep were not bothered
