last September, the Black Hear
Coal company, a subsidiary of the
Allied Industries. Inc., is rapidly
reaching that point when It will
begin actual production of coal at
its mine near Roxy Ann, six miles
from Medford. A visit, there yes

has progressed so tar as to indi
cate that production will be under
way by January 15. Approximately
300 tons of bituminodV coal is ex
pected to be .mined daily to fill
present contracts.
The company was organized last
February by J. ' Madison Lively,
Cold Hill, president and chief en
gineer; V. L. Lamb, secretary and
superintendent; William H. Lydi-j

Into rooms.
The company has driven a 250
foot tunnel-of sufficient propor
tions to permit, if required, elec
tric locomotive for drawing trains
of mine cars. The tunnel taps a
12 to 15-foot vein of good coal
sufficient to fill all requirements
of the present market for many
yeans. There are millions of tons
of A-l- hard .coal available in the
field. At present there is 500,000
tons 'in that condition which west
ern miners term "blocked out," or
. ready for removal. There is good
giavlty haul and water drainage.
So Bituminous Vein.
Tho tunneL cuts into the coal
strata in this field, designated as
vein number 2, which, lies in
blanket formation -Inclined - north
eastward about ten degrees. The
strata shows from five to six feet
if hard, bright' bituminous, six to
wwen feet of shaley bituminous and
Trom 12 to 15 feet of rCoal rich
in by-products and carbon fuel.
The comjlnny owns coal leases. In
other fields near the one now being
operated. They will bo developed
later. The company has contracts
for the daily delivery of 200 to 250
tons of coal for manufacturing
purposes, and other contracts are
under negotiation. Nearly t v o
miles of new road have been con
structed to the scene of operations
from the Illllcrest-Ashland county
road, east of Medford.
When the mine is In active op
eration next January, 'In the neigh
borhood of 50 men are expected to
be employed.
