At Wednesday Meet feinbers of the Wednesday Study club held their regular meeting Wednesday -afternoon, Mrs. L. K. Williams giving a most enlightening paner on "The Soviet Kxperiment Population, Classes and Conditions In Itussia'' by Wil liam Chamberlln. The oriental strain is found in the Russian, they being a semi-oriental nation, ami being accustomed to the rule of despotic forces, the reign of the soviet government does not mean to them what it would to a people used to real freedom. Christianity first came into Russia In !M7, the princess Olga becoming the first convert at this time. In li!47 serf dom became hereditary, the serf being sold with the land, and in time they finally became slaves to be sold at the will of their masters or the landlords. In 1 S 05 slavery and the release of the serfs was granted under the rule of Alexan der tho Second. Today the word soviet really means counsel and there are J 500 members of the highest group of these counselors or committeemen, by which all problems of the soviet government arc finally decided. Staling being the secretary for this counsel. So viet Russia covers over one-half of K u rope nnd one-fourth of the entire world. They still show their relation to people of Asia, it is noticed in their dress and social customs. In Moscow the once Im perial buildings are being used for trades unions' halls for public meetings, stores and factories. All members of the trade unions are given tickets for which they re ceive all kinds of merchandise and in fact everything they may want at greatly reduced prices, the la boring class receive the best of everything. Atheism has become almost universal, but In many of the homes the candles still burn around tho home altar. The ques tion is being asked everywhere how will it ull end, this struggle for the human soul. While the communist recognizes no personal or national soul, they have raised tho peasant worker who is not prepared, to new position and power superior to tho favored classes and are trying to force them into a cooperative union. This is the aim of tho soviet to finally unite tho whole world Into oneg real union. . Mr. Chamberlln is the rjussian correspondent for tho Christian Science Monitor, having been in Russia for the past seven years, and his book is well worth read ing. Mrs. Vawter followed with a most Interesting book review, "Hu manity Uprooted" by Maurice Hin dus, a native of Russia, who came to the United Slates at tho age of H, but who has returned to Rus sia a number of times. The book Is divided Into three parts: Insti tutions, Peoples and Parts. The au thor says theru Is more agony and also more raptures beyond human comparison found in this land of mystery. Russia wants . a nation with no God In it. They have torn down all crosses and shrines by tiie roadsides and broken out all the beautiful windows in the churches with the hope of finally stamping out religion from their country. The children are taken fnftn the homes and caret! for by t he govern men t, as hn'h father and mother are eompelh'd to wm k. The youth of tod:ty have no god and no public opinion to restrain them so they indole in all kinds of excesses; they say "live today n nd die" tomorrow." Mrs. Harding led the discussion of the subjects for tho afternoon, closing with an article from the. Oregonian. "Thirteen Years of the Soviet." During Russia's five year plan they have increased factory products, also all farm producls, yet their farmers pay cxhorlblant prices and they receive only one tenth of the American wage. Grain is abundant but large (plant hies are exported to pay for the Im ported machinery, the people draw llmiled rations at the stores. The soviet has stifled individual self intereyt. which promote public Studio t Phone 1308 Lady Lions Enjoy Bridge Luncheon, Thank Local Artists for Program A delightful event of tho week i in club circles va the luncheon ' for Lady I-ioiis held at the Hotel j Holland Wednesday afternoon. Luncheon was followed by j bridge at the home of Vrs. Allen Smith with prize for high score be ing won by Mrs. 1 G. Hunch. The activities of the club are increasing with the approach of Christmas. Kach year the mem bers do considerable work for the needy of the city and they have enlarged their program for this season. Through the courtesy of radio station KMKD the club was on the air for an hour and a half Thurs day evening soliciting toys to be distributed to poor children Christ - welfare, and winch makes the United States a shining contrast to Itussia.
