The pathe of Howard and Welling have crossed mys Itrlously in the past. Dagger Jails In love with Howard, who as a vile he does not love, but he resists the temptation to return Dagger's affection and joins the Allied armies in France. Later he It reported missing in action and probably dead, Ueanwhtle Welling leaves the ranch to foln a Itrlttsh commission buying hartr.t for the army. Dafiocr, heartbroken by the loss of Uow ard, goes to visit her aunt in Han Antonio, Chapter 8 INTO WAR'S MAD WHIRL AUNT ESPY a child's version of Elspeth was a bustling, stout, little woman, with bright, beady eyes. She was njvor In doubt on any subject, and regarded the world with a suspicion she made no at tempt to hide, but her soft drawl and a genuine kindness ot heart went far to minimize the effect of what otherwise must have seemed ssperlty. Whatever has Jim Marley been doing to you?" "We'rs short-banded on the ranch," Dagger pqrrled. "And It's been hot,". " v v : "Hotl It's hot hero In Son 'An 0mo but Humph! Well, tho first thing we do Is to see that you're dressed ns becomes a girl of your age. 1 reckon I'll have to fatten you, too. It doesn't favor you to be skinny, child." From the automobile they had entored, Dagger stared curiously at the swnrma ot soldiers In the streets, and her aunt snapped tart ly: , "Ye; there's all tho men In crea tion In the place, and a pretty girl can have a different beau every evening. 1 hope yon won't lose 'your head like a lot ot flighty chits 1 could name, and go gallivanting with whoever asks yon, Just because be wears a uniform." Dagger laughed a little bitterly. "I havon't any desire to go galli vanting, Aunty; but It will be fun to soe a tew men who aren't old or peons." "You'll bo sick ot 'em In a month," her aunt predicted. "Too much man Is like too much sweetonlng bad for comfort." High over head sounded a mighty, droning roar, as It somo monstrous bumble-bee was puzzlng past. In the atreot, people craned their necks, and Dagger thrust her head out the car window to look up. All she caught was a swift glint of wings limned against the blue of the sky: but the sheer miracle of the picture, dirked her. - "How gorgeous,'' she cried. "An aeroplane, Aunty!" "Most as many ot those fool con traptlons as men." her aunt roturt ed. "That Willie Of mine goes up In them every day. Nothing would do, but he must he nn avlntnr. I flnOW?IflfcOK( Oro.V July 31. "But you're proud of him, Aunt Espy." exclaimed Dagger. "I'd give anything to fly." "Well, by all the say, It's dan gerous enough," sniffed Aunt Espy. I'd sleep easier mornings, It I didn't know that duout sunrise Willie's likely to go up. Oh, he'll talk you deaf-and-dumb when be sees you about props and tall-skids, and ailerons, and nose-dives, and I don't know what. When will WIlllo be home?" "IIo gets leave every night or so. But first, we simply must go shop ping. I can't have you receiving callers dressed like Jim Marley's Idea of what a young girl should wear. I'm amazed he didn't send you off In khaki pants." To tell the truth, Dagger enjoyed Immensely those feverish hours dur ing which her aunt hectored her through the few stores the little city boasted. Annt Espy was fussily pleased by the transformation. As for Willie, he enmo homo one evening, dis posed to demonstrate a lordly inter est in his "kld-cousln," fetching1 with hl'm sovoraf fellow cadetst but be fore he loft, nt the Inst possible moment permitted' by his pasB, he wns battling with his cbrrfprmlons for Dagger's least nttontlons. Willie achieved a consclons superiority ot tone. "Why. he's the ace. He was In the Royal Flying Corps, and transferred homo after we came la. He's teaching combat flying out at Kolly. New Method of Treating Is Only Effective Remedy K:nritFdu .li'.i A HOME TREATMENT GUARANTEED RESULTS Everyone knows that piles and hemorrhoid), are caused by swollen, dilated veins, but until the new method of internally treating pile waa perfected nothing saemingly would relieve except an operation. Now, thanks to the chemists of to Hay, piles and hemorrhoids should soon be a thing of the past. Only a person who has suffered long and terribly with piles can imagine how glorious it is to be free of auch troubles, yet it can be done now. The chemists said "Why can't we put a coating on a pill that when swallowed will not dissolve until it reaches the bow els 7 Then let it melt into a heal ing, soothing, pain banishing liq uid that will help nature banish alt signs of the trouble. Research re mitted in the making of Colac Pile Pills and tests in thousands of cases prove it almost infallible. As one stilTerer recently said "It is the only thing that ever helped me. For years I suffered terribly with pile. Could not work, aland up or lie down in comfort. It dis couraged me to get no relief. Then one day a druggist friend told me about Colae Pile Pills something entirely new and I was desperate enough to try anything. To make a long story short, I got relief in two days and was cured in fire, and haven't had a touch of pilea since." Mrs, John Quinlan. Glens Falls. N. Y. WHY SUFFER ANY MORE? Similar cases in thousands of In stances have responded promptly to Colae Pile Pills. Druggists are authoriied to refund money if any user isn't relieved.
