By the end of this week, over 200.000 steelhead and salmon trout will have been salvaged from several Jackson county streams now drying up. W. K. Coleman, state superintendent of fish screens, assisted by Thomas Cing kuid. by the end of last week had taken 1X0. iMM) trout from Sardine. , Sams. Kane ami (Jails creeks ami placed them in the ltoguc river. They are doing sim ilar, work this week at Trail creek, where at least 20.000 fish are expected to he salvaged. Of this total, approximately 125.0UO were taken in Sardine creek from pools in different parts of the stream, a short distance north of Cold Hill. The trout are the result of natural propaga tion and In the opinion of M r. Coleman are of a sturdier type than those produced in fish hatch eries due to the fact the Iroiit were self-supporting from the time they were hatched and are not fed like those grown in hatcheries and then turned loose in the river or other streams to care for them selves without previous experience. Inability to reach the Rogue river from the small streams causes the trout considerable hardship through difficulty to find suffic ient sustenance. Most of those taken so far, were In a starved com! it ion. The mortality rate of the fingeiiings Is expected to he remarkably low. Another menace that these fish must endure In the pools of drying streams are water snakes which swallow a fisl several inches long. Last Friday Mr, Coleman killed three or four and during the past two weeks, has killed over a dozen. Last , week, one snake became so am bitious it Jumped and bit deter minedly at a wire basket in which 1 he trout were being caught. It bit the wire so hard that some pressure had to he exerted before the reptile could he pulled loose und killed. The snakes are num erous In the county and dent ruc tion of many small trout is at tributed to them. in three weeks and possibly less, irrigation demands In the Talent district are expected to reach. that stage when the storage water In Hyatt lrairie dam will he exhausted and fishing for the season will bo over.
