Chapter 25 TONV RETURNS IIXARY LOO saw Brynmor fre " Quontly during the next several weeks. It became genuinely pleas ant to talk with him ot things that she preferred not to discuss with Jay. .. .. i Before she realized It, Tony was almost due to return. One day he cabled her from New York tbat he hoped' to be In London within a week. It was late on a May afternoon when Gay Girl, like a huge silver homing pigeon, appeared through the' clouds above Croyden Held, . Great crowds bad surged there to welcome Tony borne. Praise ot biB accomplishment was on everyone's lips. Mary Lou shared his glory too, as "the girl to whom Tony Titberington Is engaged." She tried to feign an appearance of happiness,, but It. was not sincere. It was with a mingled feeling of (ear and suspense that she went to Croyden to greet him tear that the time had come wben their game of "lot's pretend" would end, and suspense because well, when would it end? , Jay and Jerry stood with her In the trout line ot tbe crowd as Gay Girl swooped down and came to rest not 201. feet trom them, : "Run up and meet him, Mary Lou," Jay shouted. . "Don't stand there a like a stick." ' t There was Tony, leaning from the cockpit, grinning bis lopsided grin, shaking bands with tbe field officials. But Mary Lou couldn't move. Tony, at the moment, seemed lik a stranger a lean, bronzed, adorable stranger -whom she. happened, In some Inexplicable way, ,td love. . - . :: - She felt a horrible sense of em barrassment.' Could this be the Bame Tony who: had taken ber to visit bis aunt and begged ber to become engaged to him to make this trip possible? . 1 r. ' , As she stood there, tongue-tied and glued in ber footsteps, Tony suddenly saw her. ". v.,- - : . "Mary Lou!" he , called,, and pushed hls way through the "mob toward .her, A moment later be . was'- gripping . ber ' hands, grinning down at her. "Jove, Mary Lou, It Is" great to see. -you!" Awkwardly he. bent dowu and kissed ber.. A score ot press cameras clicked as one. To morrow the whole world would see their picture under the caption, "Daredevil Flier Greets Fiancee.' Mary Lou blushed. "It's great to see you, too." It was a stupid, obvious thing to say, but ber bead was in such a whirl tbat she could think ot noth ing else. "You're , thinner, Tony." she gasped, as they made their way to s car, Tony winked. "Prickly pears," ho grinned. "They're marvelous re ducers," Tony was acting more like blm self, yet Instinctively she sensed that this Tony was different from the boy she bad known before. He looked much the some, except that he was thinner and bronzed by tbe wind; be had the same mocking blue eyes and tba same bantering smile. Perhaps the dif ference was In bis mouth. It was more stern. Yet tbe change was more In tangible than that. She felt tbat the boy Tony was gone. Tbis was a man. She didn't know whether to be glad or sorry. After all, did It matter since ebe was to lose him so soon anyway? Intently she watcbed bis proflle S8 he talked ot the flight, of the day be bad stopped In Paris on bis return. Tony was changed, to be sure, yet. Mary Lou felt a possessing longing sweep over ber. Sbe wanted Tony for herself, Her Angers itched for the feel ot his bair; sbe wanted to kiss the cleft In his chin; sbe wanted to have him close beside her. She shut her eyes In agony. Tony con tinued talking, cheerfully but un emotionallyalways of Gay Olrl. "I bad a great time In New York, Mary Lou." be said. "There's plenty ot dash and daring to those American girls. 1 tell In love with the lot of them." "Did you?" Mary Lou knew sbe note, all American girls. -' "You look tired." be commented. They had arrived at Jay's studio, and Tony came in with ber. : Jay and Jerry bad excused themselves tactfully at the Held. "It they only knew," Mary Lou thought to herself. "It they only knew the news . tbat must greet them wben they get home!" Tony blmselt couldn't understand bta feelings toward Mary Lou. Be. fore tbe flight, be bad regarded her as a bright girl, perhaps tbe nicest of all tbe girls he knew, : ' Now be felt distinctly uncomfort able with bar, Tony was not ac customed to feeling uncomfortable with girls. Tbelr relationship, he felt, must be at fault this tool nonsense about being engaged. It bad been tun (or a time great fun. Now, however, tbe Joke was beginning to wear a bit thin. Oh. well, he supposed It would end soon, and personally he would be glad wben It did. Still it was a most awkward situation. One might even: want to carry on with the game. Mary Lou, to bis surprise soon put bis doubts to rest. 1 "Well, Tony, the time has corai for me to be heartless and thrust you out ot my lite, iiasn't lt'.'"i Sbe watcbed bis eyes tor somt Indication, some hope. Tony looked both astonished anr angry. ...... , "You're not much ot a sport ;" ' "All right, I'm not," Her volet was choked. . , '. . Tony felt like kicking himself. "I'm sorry 1 said tbat, Mary Lou You're a sport, and a darn good one. If It badn't been for you, I'd never bave been able- to bava started on that, trip." He stood looking at her as sbe curled upon the divan. "I shall never forgot' tbat, Mary Lou. You know that, don't you?' His voice was almost pleading, "Well, I'm glad I've been of some use In the world." Tony walked aimlessly about the room tor a moment, then turned toward tbe door. "Well", I'd better be going. Look here, Mary Lou, you're going to let me see something of you. aren't you?" . . "I'm afraid not, Tony." ' "Damn It all, why not? Think ol all ths good times we've had to gether.
