DESPERADO CHIEF GOES 0 GALLOWS Ralph Fleagle of Lamar, Cp!.f Gang Maintains Nerve to Last As Penalty "7 Exacted for Part in Slay ; jng Four in Robbery. CANON CITY, Colo., July 11 (ff) The Lamar bandit gang to day was leader less, Ralph E. Fleagle, gray old wolf of the pack, was hanged last night . at the state penitentiary for his part In the slaying of four men . and theft of approximately $219,- 000 from the First National bank of Lamar In May, 1928. Although obviously making an ; effort to appear composed and calm as he walked from his cell to the. execution chamber, Fleagle displayed no indication of a break down. Until the time the black cap was adjusted over hla head ; and the noose tightened around his neck, the desperado main tained his coolness and nerve. . Less than an hour before he was hanged, Fleagle embraced the Catholic faith. He was baptized in his cell by the Hov. Father JrIs Barrett, prison chaplain, and received the sacraments of the church. AVALLA WALLA. Wash., July 11. (P) Preston Rae "Slim" Clark died on the gallows at the state penitentiary here at dawn . today for the murder of A. L. Bld- well of Walla Walla, whom he poisoned In December, 1927, with the aid of Ridwell's wife. Clark was brought from his cell In deuth row as the first glow of daylight appeared In the sky and was taken to the scaffold. The trap was sprung at 4:11 a. m., and (! Clark was pronounced dead by the I prison physician 12 minutes later. Prison authorities said the body I Irould probably be turned over to IHark'tf aged parents. ;.;' . The pistol-like explosion so flrghtens tho feathered thief Twenty Scientists Beard Weather Lion In Its Lair Atop Greenland's Ice Caps UN.MAK, Greenland (TP) Ten tons of scientific equipment la on its way to tho 10,000 foot roof of Greenland's ice cap, the spot re garded as the "focus" of all cold weather. Tho equipment is part of the supplies of Professor Alfred Lo thar Wegener's glactologlcal ex pedition. It goes to a permanent scientific depot on the tee, said to be the first ever manned thru out an arctic winter. The location is called the "fo cus" of northern weather because previous investigations have shown that winds blow continually out ward In all directions from Green land's ice cap. Recently, considerable evidence has been collected that this Im mense ice sheet is the controlling factor In starting many storms throughout, the whole - northern hemisphere. This homo of the weather is well guarded agufnst man's pry ing. Tho first leg of the Journey from hero will be made with Iceland' ponies and Greenland hus kies carrying 70 tons of scientific equipment. The second and last leg Is a stretch of 250 miles, beginning at the foot of Kamarujuk glacier. Sixty tons of the equipment will be left In a base camp at the foot; of the glacier, and 100 -horse power motor sledges will attempt to drag the remaining 10 tons up the slopes to the Ice cap. With Wegener are 20 scientists.. They will make trigonometrical surveys of the ice cap. j Former surveys have been based upon barometric pressures to in-1 dicate altitude. The trigonome-, trie heights are expected to be correct to within 30 feet. Wegener is professor of meteor ology and geophysics at Austrian! university of Graz.
