Angeles, Is Announcement Emen gency Fields Established The coaHt airway from Seattle through Portland to Oakland-San Kruncisco and Loa Angeles Is light ed and ready for night flying. The luat beacon has been flashed on, all emergency fields are lighted ' and one of the longest and moat difficult jobs ever tackled by the airways branch of the government lias been completed. Up and down the coant over a distance of 1100 miles, giant bea cons nightly are throwing their beams upward for guidance of air travelers. Up and down the coast there is a chain of flashing lights at intervals of 10 miles or less the "lighthouses" of 'the airway. Notification that the route is ready for scheduled night flying has been given the postoffico de jitf rtmcnt by the airways branch. Interest Is centering on the ques tion of how soon planes will be using the lighted route on regular night schedules. - Officials of Pacific Air Trans port, holder of the government contract for carrying mall over the airway, have announced no date as -yet for beginning night flying. It has been Intimated, however, that this may be started before the year is out. 130 Beacons The last light on the long stretch was turned on recently at a point about two and a half miles from llalsey, Ore., at the summit of lJond's butte, according to a report from the office of R. It. Tinkham, district superintendent of light houses. At the same time it was' announced, that emergency field work was complete. Altogether, there are 130 bea cons on the airway, with a number of them placed less than 10 miles apart in the mountainous sections. The lights are so spaced that at no time is a pilot out of sight of one. At times, he may see six at one time. Original lighting work on the airway was begun in December, lim, with the installation of bea cons between San Francisco and l.os Angeles. From then on, the work progressed steadily with con struction on the Medford-Portland i'oetlun begun in October, 1929, and on the Portland-Seattle sec tion, in April, 1929, It ulso is planned to light the 1ah$ Ange!ca-San'--LDirgtr section- of the route but this has not been started.
