Todav By Arthur Briibant Idle As a Painted Ship Equal,, If You Have $10 Interpreting the Lord Pity Small Birds Copyright King Features Synd. Inc. The lower end nf Miiiihiittiin -"fjiei'i1 this is written, was itiict on July 4th. Hulls and Hpnrs, nil away sorrowing, or ploatiiiK. Kvorythiiifr is "as idle as a painted ship, upon a painted ocean." At the deserted corner of rtroad and Wall streets, the stoek exchange looks on Mor gan 's ol'fiee,. and Morgan's nf iiee looks on the l-'nited States treasury, to rewrite Hymn, nn! "musing there an hour alone," yon dreamed that stocks might still go up. ' Long lines of longshoremen at, the edge of the Kasl river, waiting for jobs, nsmdly vis ible from this office window, are missing. 'Speakeasies, always plentiful near a big newspaper office, or any factory paying good ! wages, arc open, selling explos ives more powerful than' fire works. Americans that have long known how to work, are now learning how to play. This experiment, for many, will last until Monday morning. Acting Mayor Allen, of At lanta, .On., saying i. "I I'ave wanted to do something for my fellow beings all my life," re leased 200 prisoners from At lanta jails on Thursday, at midnight, that they might cele brate July :.4tb ijv freedom. It is undesirable to take laws nnd their punishments lightly, but the acting mayor, w-ith the approval of his superior, Mayor ifouch, had n good answer for critics. The prisoners freed, were not felons, but jailed because they lacked from five to twenty dol lars to satisfy fines for petty offenses. ' If, as wc allege on July 4, men really are created equal, it seems strange to keep one in jail, and set the other, free, because the other has ten dol lars. Doctors told Justice Hanson, in Xew York, that a i:i-yea:-old boy, name not revealed, must die, unless an operation were performed. The mother would have no operation. Her son might be dying, but she had no right to "interfere with the Lord's minus. If he wanted to take lie boy back, he had a right to bim." Justice Hanson, deciding that the Lord had no such plans, ordered nn operation, in spite of the mother, and the boy will -. ... .ill . recover. The attitude of the mother, strange to us, in V.Y-W, would have seemed natural some time ago. When the use of anaesthetics was first introduced in Kne lanil. the clergy, almost with out exception, denounced it saying the Lord wanted us to suffer, and doctors had no right to make patients uncon scious nnd free from pain while their legs were cut off. That jwns cheating the Lord.
