With a gay time in pros- pect, she dreads to return to her country home in Prinwood. tier s London cousin. Jay Jerome, offers stary Lou a iob in her gown thog. ,', ' Chapter 17 THREE SPARKLERS ; IARY LOU was to begin In Jay's gown shop at a salary of two pounds a week. Out cf that, one pound would go to Jay tor food and lodging, and another would be set aside as a sinking fund to pay. for the dresses she already bad taken from the shop, and for others the was sure to need soon. . The ten shillings her father al lowed ber would help tor such mis cellaneous current expenses as silk lockings. : '... .-, ; ., 'jifTII; never be able to thank you -hough. Jay.". Mary Lou told ber at: breakfast. "If you only knew what a load Is lifted off my mind by' not having to go back to Fr In wood!'" , . :; i; "l can well imagine It," Jay chuckled.; h,'"TDb delights of the cciiotry are not to my. taste, either. tJume down to the shop when" you feel ' like It and I'll have Mis, Fletcher explain some of the rou tine work to you."' ' . When Tony called a while later. Mary Lou broke the news to him. "Jay's offered me a job. .In her shop." she told him : excitedly. "Isn't that wonderful? That means ( never need to go back to Frln wood again, except tor visits. Isn't It darling of her?" . "Great!" rejoined Tony. He was distinctly relieved to near ber ani mated voice over the phone. He bad been a bit besltant about calling her, tor the moment of the night before, when he had held ber In his arms end kissed her. lingered dis turbingly In his tnlhd. "And are you happy other wise?" ' . "Oh, yes." Mary Lou replied with out hesitation. "Isn't It a lark? I've been chuckling over It all morning. We'll have great tun, Tony." ; ' '. ' -i ; .Tony was glad ot her reassur ance. They arranged to meet that afternoon, when he was to give ber the ring. . "Three sparklers," He told ber "Let's go to the tea dance at the Berkeley. Then I'll slip It on your anger in grand old style." . . "Fine," laughed Mary Lou. !' Her animation vanished as soon as she replaced the receiver. She sat there tor a time, ber elbowa on her knees, her chin cupped In her bands.- v r- ; .. Was It right to accept a ring from Tony when be had no Inten tion whatever ot marrying berf Was It quite rlgbt to play this game of make-believe? ' Mary Lou won dered what her father would say when he learned of It. Yet she bad agreed to play the game with Tony, and there was nothing else .o do. Nevertheless, she thought, was It quite fair of him to demand so much? Wasn't It a bit selfish? . . "l.ook here. Mary Lou," she Hnally told herself, "you've got to banish the blues. This cake may be stale at the bottom, but there'a toffee on top. . And you'd better" eat up that toffee as fast aa you can. A tew minutes later aba was In Jay'a shop, receiving ber first lea- son In salesmanship from Mlsa Fletcher. She had taken Mary Lou to the upstairs alteration room, and they were Inspecting a rack of new gowns which bad Just arrived. "Nerer assure a customer that a certain dress looks well on ber. when It doesn't." Miss Fletcher re marked with emphasis. " "That's maxim No. 1." said Mary Lou, "but supposing the customer icanii to be convinced?" "That Is one of our greatest difficulties." Miss Fletcher agreed, "You must persuade her, tactfully, that some other dress . would be much belter. Tell her that another dresa shows off ber figure to much more advantage, that she'll really look more smart In the other dress that you'v decided to sell her. Show her some gown that will loo': well on ber, and tell ber It's lb imartest thing In the house." "Wonderful," Mary Lou smiled. "And does she swallow the ball!" "Invariably. Every good sales woman must try to understand tb mind of ber client," Mis Fletcbsr declared. "The old-fashioned days. when you told any old lie for a sale, are gone. You musl.flnd out what she really likes, way back In her mind, tor that's wbat'a going to please her In tb long run. vsbBpJ "It's hard sometimes, for client. Ilk all ot us, are carried away by momentary enthusiasms. If you sell them a gown under those con ditions It meana bad trade In tb end." "Supposing," said Mary Lou. wbo waa determined to make a success ot the Job. ."supposing nothing In the shop seems to piease her?" "Ah!" returned Miss Fletcher as she shook out a frock ot jhiffon. 'There you're up against some thing. Often It' best Just to let her go. But be sure there's such genuine regret In your manner that she'll come back again. Never, by any chance, allow a oustomer to think you're lo the least chagrined It she doesn't nuy anything, even though you've bt-eo hours showing ber every dresa In the hop!" Mary Lou picked up many tales pointers In the course of the murn ing. . She was to start work in earnest the following week Al ready she had written her ruilie about It, and she was sure he wouldn't cbJecL That afternoon, dancing with Tony al the Berkeley, tbey ran Into -Gwendolyn Carruthers. It wasn't surprising, tor Gwendolyn baunied the Berkeley. 'Hello, there's old Gwendolyn," cried Tony, waving gaily In hei dl recllon. "Let's try out uew oo ber. See bow she takes It" Mary Lou knew very well huw she would take It, bow any girl wltb a grain ot aense would uptirui to take lu 1 "Ob, darlings, darlings, this is ae llebtful. de-llRht-ful." Gwendolva exclaimed, "lt'a Just loo Jolly. We must have a party. I'm so thrilled 1 don't know what to do!" 'Gwendolyn seemed very pleased about It," Tony remarked later wltb a chagrined grin. "Chuckiug modesty to the winds. I always thought she bad her eye on me Yet she seemed genuinely glad." Mary Lou laughed at his sim plicity. "Darling," she mocked. "It's not what she said tbatlcouuts. Didn't you notice ber look? It said plainly, 'How has sbe done It? I II bet she worked the simple, trusting stnnu. That always gets a niau like: Tony.' Couldn't you see it In her. eyes?" ' :'. ! 'Mary Lou ' woaoered now tar It! waa wise to Initiate him Into the' mysteries ot feminine psychology If abe were having blm tor keeps she' might not have been bo ready to tell, blm that much. But since theirs was only a temporary affair. . , . . ' 'Wbo ' cares what Gwendolyn thinks or look, any way ?" Tony- re . marked as tb danue ended. "I say I haven't given you the sparkler; yet. Here they are." ' They eat down and be punhed aside a plate of . oakes. A small blue)' velvet box lay In the palm ot bis ' band. He pressed the catch and grinned up at ber as the bos opened. Mary Lou gasped. It wus a nemi tlful ring, wltb three hugs die monds winking wickedly on a thin platinum band. ' "It's wonderful! ' But. Tony, you shouldn't" "Rot! ' Aunt Etbeluerta came across, and there's no reason why you shouldn't share In the polla You deserve It!" "I feel rather guilty," Mary Lou murmured. "Forget It Here, hold out yout band." Carelessly be slipped the ring on to ber hnger. . A queer thrill siiui through Mary Lou. Sbe uiigln have become sentimental. If. slie hadn't glanced up to see Tunv toik Ing down at her wltb bis lopsided grin. , Sbe smiled, too. Hadn't she ile termlned to take It' lb a spirit ol tun? . i "Come along, let'a dance. What', Ibis tune. Katber Jolly, isn't it?' Tbey stood a minute beside then table, listening. The rat druinmei waa singing away at the lop of im voice, as be did stunt with bl drum atlcks. It was one of Hit season's lateat tunes: 'Let's pretend fnal . lave you ' Lei's pretend that you hive me. Then all the world Will paradise be. We aan have our tun - Cupid on the run, tfo heartbreaks when you. Have proved that you're untrue. . .' Tony threw back bis bead and laughed. "That's odd. It Just fits our case, doesn't II? You see what a great Idea It Is?" "Yes, great," Mary Lou echoed She glanced from the glittering ring on ber finger over lo Gwendo lyn, wbo sat talking animatedly to ber partner. Mary Lou knew she waa watching ber and Tom from tb corner of ber small green eyes watching ' and. feeling vcr so Jealous. v "Yes. great" sh repeated wltb more conviction.
